    Hi all,

Has been any news on when the new release of MQ will be available?

    Hi Emile,

IBM MQ has two types of release, long-term support (LTS) and continuous delivery (CD).

The exact duration between releases is not fixed, but the usual frequency is for LTS releases to be approximately every two years and for CD releases to be every few months. See our published FAQ at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-mq-faq-long-term-support-and-continuous-delivery-releases.

Our latest LTS release is MQ 9.3.0, which was released in June 2022.

Our latest CD release is MQ 9.3.3, which was released in June 2023.

You can use this information to get an approximate timeline for when our next versions will be released, but we cannot provide exact dates at the current time.

    I hope this helps,

    Jamie

    Thank you Jamie.

I am looking for this feature on LTS :

Setting up a remote queue manager to use with the messaging REST API

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ibm-mq/9.3?topic=mura-setting-up-remote-queue-manager-use-messaging-rest-api

I was told it will only be available in the next release of MQ, hence my question

    Hi Jamie,

We are moving to the MQ Appliance and would like to know which delivery method is preferred, CD or LTS. It appears as though some command functionality is available with the MQ Console on CD deliveries.

Which is the preferred approach to use and the one most requested with the MQ user community and why?

Also, would you happen to know if there are any worksheets available to plan configuration and migration?

    Warmest regards,

    Wayne

    Hi Wayne,

There is not a general recommendation to use either the continuous delivery (CD) firmware or the long-term support (LTS) firmware. Both firmware releases are fully supported, so you can choose which one to use based on your own preference. The main differences between LTS and CD releases are that CD releases are more frequent (approximately every 4 months) and they have a shorter support life. LTS releases are less frequent (approximately every 2 years), but they are supported for longer. Each LTS release usually includes all of the capabilities added to previous CD releases. If you would like to use the latest features as soon as possible, such as the updates to the MQ Console that you mentioned, then you can use the CD firmware. If you do not need the latest features, or you are not able to update firmware as often, then you might prefer the LTS option instead. You do not have to commit to only ever using CD or LTS. We often see customers use LTS firmware by default, but then jump to CD when there is a feature they want to use. Once that feature is included in a subsequent LTS release they might then switch back to LTS again. Some customers always only use LTS or CD. Other customers use LTS in production but CD in their development environments so their developers can experiment with features earlier. You can also mix and match within your estate because all MQ releases are interoperable, so this is also another pattern that we see. For example, systems that need the latest features might use CD, while others use LTS. If you haven't seen it, then there is an FAQ document that answers commonly asked questions about the differences between CD and LTS at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-mq-faq-long-term-support-and-continuous-delivery-releases, which you might find helpful in deciding which option is best for you.

The following topics in our documentation are a good reference for planning configuration and migration, especially when switching to the appliance from another platform:

Differences between administering an IBM MQ Appliance and an IBM MQ installation
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/mq-appliance/9.3?topic=planning-differences-between-administering-mq-appliance-mq-installation

Differences between queue managers that are running on the IBM MQ Appliance and an IBM MQ installation
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/mq-appliance/9.3?topic=planning-differences-between-queue-managers-that-are-running-mq-appliance-mq-installation

The MQ Appliance documentation at https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/mq-appliance/9.3 also includes detailed sections on planning, installation, migration, configuration and administration.

I hope this helps, but if you have further questions, then please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jamie

    Hi Jamie,

    Thanks for the detailed response.

Some of the concerns for using CD or LTS spawned from 1) new functionality; 2) MQ community blog posts stating that falling back to LTS requires a time when LTS catches up with CD as to not deprecate features; 3) and the V9.3 Appliance guide stating that the firmware of connected HA/DR appliances should match, and if a firmware upgrade is done to one appliance, changes should freeze until all are normalized at the new level. That gives me the impression that we cannot mix & match firmware levels in connected appliances.

Would you happen to know if the Appliance supports the following:

    1) A password management system, such as One Identity Safeguard, Total Privileged Access Management, etc? This is a Risk Management audit item and required for global institutions.

    2) Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server? We maintain our MQ assets in TEPS to centralize definitions and ease change deployments within our Queue Managers, both mainframe and distributed, across multiple runtime environments. This insures cloned environments from the lowest runtime level all the way through to Production.

    Best,
    Wayne

    Hi Wayne,

For number 2, you do know that you are supposed to go through a distributed "Management Server" to access the appliance qmgrs.

You can also populate assets on the appliance qmgr using the client version of runmqsc (on the management server)...

    Hope this helps
