App Connect iPaaS solution architecture

    Hi,

Would you please help to find a reference architecture for App Connect iPaaS solution. I went through underlying link and its embedded links but I can't find something about the architecture and the security applied in this offering.

IBM App Connect - Application integration software | IBM

    Appreciate your help.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Mohamed,

Are you after something like this: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/app-connect/saas?topic=overview-solution-architecture?

    Yes, Thanks Martin.

By the way, I did not see  Data Power or API Connect in the architecture, it seems that the App Connect services will be exposed directly to the consumer and security will be via a web firewall or a private network. Is this a valid understanding?

From the best practices point of view, do we have a reference architecture that covers the best practices in terms of security , scalability, and sustainability of the solution?

    Kind Regards.

    Hi Mohamed,

The component providing the web application firewall additionally provides DDoS protection for the service. The linked page does not detail other aspects of security like encryption and authentication / authorisation if that is something that you would like more information on. I am in the process of constructing reference architectures for REST APIs being exposed via API Connect and other integration patterns for security and availability etc. If there are any specific questions you would like to see addressed in those then I would welcome your input.

Thanks Martin, that will be helpful, I am currently working on a solution to integrate IBM Engineering Workflow Management (EWM) and  third party systems (some are on Cloud and others On-Prem) through App Connect iPaaS on AWS. I will need to use the following connector and integration nodes to integrate these systems together, do you think of any constraints / technical blockers?

    • IBM Engineering WorkFlow Management (EWM) connector
    • MQ Nodes
    • File Nodes
    • Rest Nodes
    • SOAP Nodes

Please let me know if you have any question and thanks once again for your help.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Mohamed,

The only thing that comes to mind is that the IBM Engineering WorkFlow Management (EWM) connector is currently only available within the Designer authoring tool - whilst we are continuing to port connectors to be available for use in Toolkit development tool this particular connector is not available there at this current time. @Owen Jeffs may have a view on whether this is included in any current plans. This will mean that you may need to write some of your integration flows in the Designer authoring tool and some in Toolkit depending on the logic that you are needing to implement - both are fully supported in App Connect Enterprise as a Service.

    Hi Martin,

What is the point of having the EWM connector in the designer without the ability to deploy on the runtime?

@Owen Jeffs, do we have any plans to enable EWM connector on the runtime environment (Data Plane) in the near future?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Mohamed,

Apologies if I caused any confusion - the EWM connector from designer is very much supported to be deployed on the runtime, it is just not available currently within the Toolkit authoring experience. So to use it today you would build your flow in Designer and then export that as a BAR file runtime artefact and deploy to the runtime.

    Thanks Martin, that is clear.

I would like to prepare iPaaS App Connect Infra T-Shirt size to host above solution on AWS, do we have a reference in this?

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Mohamed,

Currently the pricing for App Connect Enterprise as a Service on AWS is for VPC_HOURS - this equates to the number of CPU cores your require to process your workloads. To determine your resource requirements we would need to understand the workload that you are looking to support, the transaction rates and message sizes and an idea on the shape of the integration flows you are looking to build.
