Join us for some Real World examples of AI at work for the better good of humanity. Topics range from reducing food waste to assisting astronauts in Space.
As Canadians, every day we waste a total of 2.4M potatoes, 1.2M tomatoes, 1.2M apples, and many more. More than half of all food produced in Canada is lost or wasted. This totals to an equivalent to 9.8 million tons of CO2 or 2.1 million cars on the road (~10% of cars in Canada).
At the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts have been introduced to CIMON the first ever AI robot in Space. CIMON can assist astronauts in day-to-day activities, especially in conducting scientific research, as well as providing emotional interactions in what can otherwise be a very isolating experience.
Agenda
6:00 - 6:30 PM - Pizza
6:30 - 7:30 PM - Presentations
- Intro - by Bruce Turgeon
- "Project CIMON - AI in Space" - by Bruce Turgeon
- "Using AI to reduce food waste" - by Florian Goebels
7:30 - 8:00 PM - Wrap-up
Speakers (bios)
Bruce Turgeon - Senior Power Systems Technical Specialist in Canada with a BSc degree in Honours Applied Physics & Computer Science minor (University of Waterloo), 27 years of experience at IBM Canada Ltd, and founder of this Meetup Group.
Florian Goebels - Ph.D in Computer Science (University of Munich), Postdoctoral Fellow (University of Toronto) and has 10 years of experience in Data science. Working for BMO's Data Cognition Team, Florian uses his acquired ML expertise to deliver the best possible solutions to specific problems.
