Pictures in Custom Dialog Help Files

When creating an .spd file or an .spe file the Dialog Builder (V25 and V27) does not include pictures that were included in the intended help file ( an .htm file produced in Word).

    I tried two ways:
    a) The <helpfile>__files folder that was produced by Word doesn't make it into the .spd/spe
    b) I edited the Word file and changed the references to <helpfile>__files\picture to picture and moved the pictures themselves one step up from the folder they were in, and included these picture files in the .spe.

When I manually add either these pictures or the subfolder to the folder indicated by SPSS_CDIALOGS_PATH the helpfile shows as expected, but having to add files manually feels counterintuitive when speaking of automation.

Is there another way to accomplish what I'm looking for?

    Regards
    Kees

I haven't tried this, but saving your Word file in mht format (single file web page) might work.  That embeds the graphics as hex code in the main document.  Browsers might have some security settings that could interfere, however.

Another likely possibility would be to save as rtf, which would also be a single-file format.

Gee, Jon, thanks. I couldn't  get your suggestions to work (both needed externally stored pictures) but along the way I found that SPSS reads .rtf files, so I saved my helpfiles as .docx files, which worked. I just hadn't realised that you can use any file format, provided the appropriate application is present. The XML says the helpfile is xxx.docx and voilà. I mistakenly thought that a browser was at work behind the scenes.

    Thanks a lot!

A browser might do the job, but you could also give the doc an rtf extension, which might not depend on Word or Word clones.

O, I just realise that what goes for .rtf also goes for .doc. My Word doc also references the original location of the pictures.
So unless I send those helpfiles with an instruction where to store the included pictures my users won't be able to see the pictures. Hmm, I'll be back when I think of something...

I think rtf has the pictures embedded in the main file, so  you shouldn't need to specify a location.

... but the obvious way of course is to use pdf's.

PDFs will work as well, but Jon is also correct that Statistics RTF exports binhex PNG images directly into the RTF file - no external dependencies. I recall writing that code ~15 years ago :-).

    Hi Kees,

You should be able to create RTF files with embedded images (no external references). How are you generating your Word doc files now?
