    Hello all,

    Like me many folks are entering into data science field from different background.I have learnt Data science ,machine learning through self study.But it would be great if I get chance to work on live project as a stretch assignment and get some mentoring for my first project.As without mentoring on a very first project it will be very difficult to get real knowledge.

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards,
    Aradhana

    Hi,
    I am Arun. I too agree with 'Aradhana Patil' there should be few startup project available for Data Science, ML and AI. This will help Novices to enter the (Data Science, ML and AI) world and may also contribute in new ideas in the initial stages as well.

    Thank you

    Hi,

    I have some experience in data analysis but now moving into Data Science. Did self study on basics but now want to work on assignments / projects. Please let me know if someone wants me to join

    Hi Manisha,

    I am interested to join you. I don't have any experience in Data Analysis/Data Science, but like to switch to career in Data Science. Did some basic courses in Data Science in Python.

    Thanks

    Hi All,

    I started self studying following "Your Learning/Hot Roles" recommended learning and badges. I would like to have guidance from a Mentor. I tried to find one on CoachMe, but without success. Do you know who can help me?

    Hi @Aradhana Patil, during our Community Day event this summer, both @Srini Kadamati and @Gabriela de Queiroz talked about ways to get into data science careers and may have some great insights on mentoring. In fact, we are getting ready to promote a live talk with @Gabriela de Queiroz and a colleague of hers, Caitlin Hudon, to talk about this in a live office hours discussion early October. I'll be sure to add a registration link to this thread so you can ask questions directly and continue to petition for a mentor :)

    Also flagging this to @Ana Echeverri, @Susan Malaika and @Ann Rayburn in case there is anyone in their network that can follow up with you on this!

    Cheers,

    Christina

    Thanks for tagging me @Christina Howell

    Hi @Aradhana Patil, @Arun Kamble and @Sergio Silvestri,

    Finding a mentor is not easy but there are a few suggestions I can provide.

    1) There is a website called "Data Helpers" that lists a few data professionals who are able to answer questions, promote, or mentor newcomers into the field;

    2) Online mentorship (PAID):  Springboard and Galvanize;

    3) Find communities (online or in-person) - meetup.com has several ones;

    4) Reach out to mentors through LinkedIn.

    I hope this helps!

    We will be talking more about this at a live talk next month. Stay tuned!

    Great suggestions, thank you @Gabriela de Queiroz. Another community member @DIANE REYNOLDS recently blogged about mentorship here. Maybe something she can help with as well?

    I recommend you enter one of the playground challenges on Kaggle.  There you will have access to lots of content on he challenge forum, shared solutions in the kernel sections, and more.  This is what we tell data scientists in the Analytics business unit.

    Current playground on Kaggle:

    @Aradhana Patil hey, I'm involved with Dataquest and we have a strong project focus (Data Science And Data Engineering Projects | Dataquest). You can read more at our blog as well (Dataquest Blog Posts-Getting a Job and Project Content at Dataquest  and Start collaborating ).

    I recommend the following approaches:

    - Volunteering your data science skills for nonprofits. Check out groups like Data4Democracy and Delta Analytics.
    - Starting a data blog and writing up the work you've done on your own data projects. You can use communities in reddit to get some feedback.
    - Finding collaborators where there's a jigsaw puzzle fit (e.g. one person is strong in visualization, one in programming, one in statistical modeling). DrivenData and Kaggle competitions are good avenues for finding collaborators to work on shared problems!
    - Looking for data science internships. Some accept applications from people who aren't in college.
    - Try to become a mini-expert in something. Instead of trying to be a generic data scientist, you can spend a few months really becoming good at working with public data in a specific domain (health, finance, energy are broad ones, but you can find sub-domains that align with your previous work experience). Create data science projects that focus on that sub-domain and try to find other interesting collaborators that way.
    - Networking at data science meetups! Find managers looking for data help and can perhaps create a consulting / internship opportunity for you. You may also get some candid feedback on your resume, what skills they find you're missing, etc.

    I am checking with  great colleagues Margriet Groenendijk, Svetlana Levitan, Jerome Nilmeier, Augustina Ragwitz, to see what they suggest  re: mentoring.

    Another suggestion is to participate in the awesome WiDS (Women in Data Science) Datathon - The people I talked to who participated in 2018 loved it.  The Datathon will be coming up again in early 2019 Datathon
