    Summary

Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners is a financial services innovator that creates financial security for low-wage workers through workplace and marketplace solutions. As part of the IBM AI incubator for social impact, IBM and Neighborhood Trust teams collaborated to explore and analyze data to derive insights and build a machine learning pipeline to understand the relationship between users' financial characteristics (such as bank transactions and credit reports) and their probability of experiencing financial distress. The team prioritized transparency to explain the impact of features on user's likelihood of being in financial distress. Part of the solution relied around the application of a novel segmentation algorithm called ProtoDash, which allowed the team to identify "prototypical users", or users that are the most representative of Neighborhood Trusts' user base. The team used Watson Studio, AutoAI, and the AI Explainability 360 toolkit during their engagement.

Half the country does not trust the other half. A significant number of people does not trust the medical community enough to save their own lives, thinking there are microchips in the vaccine. We have "fake news" being spread about Oompa Loompas, autocracies globally on the rise, big brother is abusing power and pushing propaganda, republicans gaslighting about storming the capital, climate change threatening us all, and you want to stick a creepy machine in poor people's pockets to look around? To what end? What if, your board members had to wait a little longer on that 4th vacation property and invested in the human race instead of making those far less fortunate feel paranoid about buying and enjoying a few too many donuts? It is not exactly rocket sturgery, but having 5 unexpected kids, 3 jobs, and a broke down car, causes people to be distracted and easier to control. It makes incompetent leaders jobs a lot easier. You can't watch the ring master while juggling 12 balls and someone in the crowd tossing you knives, not to mention the machine in your pocket breathing down your leg about an overdraft fee caused by a new tire and a box of Twinkies. How about a nice accountability algorithm instead? Willy Wonka needs to be brought down a notch.

    Just sayin...
