I would go in place update as far as it can go (7.1.11, I think is latest)

Install same version on Win2019 (not supported but should work; Test it.)

Do DR movement to new server (DB backup/restore).

Once on a new server, do upgrade to 8.1.Latest.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Arthur:

Perform the upgrade in 2 stages:
        1. Stage 1: Upgrade to any level between 8.1.2.x and 8.1.11.x.
        2. Stage 2: Upgrade to 8.1.12.x or newer.

    See the followin APAR:

I would personally avoid 8.1.15 like the plague. The AIX Version has serious backup DB problems due to the very poorly implemented DB2 version it contains. The Windows version may be OK, but once bitten.... I am still running all of our daily housekeeping manually until we get our 8.1.15 production servers up to 8.1.17.

I would build from scratch with server 2019 or better still server 2022 and put SP 8.1.17 on that. Then I would move a few clients day to the new server. Let the 7.1.1.1 server age out gracefully. Upgrading in place across this many versions is a multiple step process and is going to drag along any fragmented storage and a fragmented TSM database if you ever used the server at anything close to capacity. The existing hardware is likely to be slower and close to end of life too.

You customer will probably have their own reasons for wanting to upgrade in place but IMHO it will not be a best idea.

Hi Stephen, my name is Mike Sisco and I am a Manager with Spectrum Protect Development. I am very interested in your experience with the AIX in-place upgrade you performed from V7 to V8. I would like my technical team to review your case(s) and determine what exactly the pain points were and make sure we can address them going forward. While doing a "cutover" migration can be effective, and optimal in some cases, it shouldn't be a requirement based on having an early V7.1 database schema. Here are a couple of questions I have:

    1) What do you mean by poorly implemented DB2 version leading to DBB problems? Was there an APAR provided that is fixed in 8.1.17 for this condition?

    2) What kind of DB fragmentation did you encounter at V8 that wasn't addressable with utilities such as DB2 reorg?

Would you mind reaching out to me directly with more background, and context behind your experience. If you have Salesforce ticket numbers you can share that would be helpful. You can reach me directly via email address - siscomi@us.ibm.com

    Thank you very much.

    Update guys...

Here's our procedure for the upgrade.

    1. From production TSM Server 7.1.1.1 running on Windows Server 2012, backup DB
    2. Install Windows Server 2012 on new host
    3. Attached via SAN, TS3200 with 4 x LTO6 and TS4300 with 6 x LTO9
    4. Install TS3200 device drivers
    5. Install TSM Server 7.1.1.1
    6. Configure instance
    7. Drop DB
    8. Restore DB (from step 1)
    9. Configure TS3200 library, configure LTO6 drives (including paths)
    10. Test restore
    11. Backup TSM DB
    12. Upgrade Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2016
    13. Test restore
    14. Backup TSM DB
    15. Upgrade TSM Server 7.1.1.1 to SP Server 8.1.15
    16. Test restore
    17. Install TS4300 tape library device drivers
    18. Configure TS4300 library, configure LTO9 drives (including paths)
    19. Define devclass
    20. Define storage pools
    21. Test backup on LTO9
    22. Test restore from LTO9
    23. Backup SP DB
    24. Upgrade Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2022
    25. Test backup on LTO9
    26. Test restore from LTO9
    27. Test migration of LTO6 to LTO9

SP Server for Windows 8.1.15 on Windows Server 2022 in production

Thank you all for your inputs.

    Cheers,

    Bobbie
