Hi Stephen, my name is Mike Sisco and I am a Manager with Spectrum Protect Development. I am very interested in your experience with the AIX in-place upgrade you performed from V7 to V8. I would like my technical team to review your case(s) and determine what exactly the pain points were and make sure we can address them going forward. While doing a "cutover" migration can be effective, and optimal in some cases, it shouldn't be a requirement based on having an early V7.1 database schema. Here are a couple of questions I have:
1) What do you mean by poorly implemented DB2 version leading to DBB problems? Was there an APAR provided that is fixed in 8.1.17 for this condition?
2) What kind of DB fragmentation did you encounter at V8 that wasn't addressable with utilities such as DB2 reorg?

I would personally avoid 8.1.15 like the plague. The AIX Version has serious backup DB problems due to the very poorly implemented DB2 version it contains. The Windows version may be OK, but once bitten.... I am still running all of our daily housekeeping manually until we get our 8.1.15 production servers up to 8.1.17.
I would build from scratch with server 2019 or better still server 2022 and put SP 8.1.17 on that. Then I would move a few clients day to the new server. Let the 7.1.1.1 server age out gracefully. Upgrading in place across this many versions is a multiple step process and is going to drag along any fragmented storage and a fragmented TSM database if you ever used the server at anything close to capacity. The existing hardware is likely to be slower and close to end of life too.
You customer will probably have their own reasons for wanting to upgrade in place but IMHO it will not be a best idea.
