Help! My backup set is continually getting larger and we are quickly burning through scratch tapes. I am using IMB3573.

    Hi,

In short terms, you need to make sure the get filled up to 100%.  One classical reason is that collocation is turned on.  This is good for restore speed and minimizing tape mounts, but will, as you say, eat all your scratch tapes.  For the tape stg pool, look for the setting 'collocation', and reclaim settings.

    Upd stg tapepool recla=50 collocate=no

A low reclaim valyou will eat tapedrives.  You may want to start of higher, and work downwards.

    Thanks!

I'll make that setting change and give it another go! I hadn't considered working downwards. Good call.

    Hi,

Check tape status for tape in question:  q vol TAPELABEL f=d

The access and status is what you should look at.

You can try a manual reclaim to see what actlog shows.

    reclamin stg stgpoolname th=98

Look for the process number in actlog.

    q actlog begint=-1 se='s: PROCCESS'

Or you can try to move the data manually with the move command

    move data command

As lon as these settings are like this:

                     Volume Status: Filling
                            Access: Read/Write

The tape will not be reclaimed before status= Full

Just let it sit there. TSM will add data to it in due time.
