How does the instant backup work if the data needs to be sent to the vSnap server? I mean, for example, SVC snapshot is really instant.

    Thanks,

The process is something along the lines of:

    • SPP server instructs the Hypervisor to quiesce the VM to be backed up
    • The hypervisor takes a snapshot of the VM (disk writes are re-directed to a temporary virtual disk file by the hypervisor)
    • The Snapshot is transferred to the vSNAP
    • Any changes during the backup operation are merged back into the virtual disk files (this is handled by the hypervisor)
Essentially as soon as the quiesce/snapshot has happened, the backup has taken place, normal VM operations resume. This should take in the region of a couple of seconds, depending on the environment and exactly what's going on with the VM at the time.

In the case of instant restore:
    • SPP restores the VM definition
    • vSNAP hosted virtual disks are mounted on the hypervisor
    • VM is started
    • Virtaul disks are VMotioned / Storage Migrated over to the hypervisor while the VM is running
    • vSNAP is unmounted
    • Recovery is complete

    I hope this helps.
