  • 1.  URGENT - Can't open SPSS, PLEASE HELP!

    Hi there,

    Each time I open SPSS v29 on macOS 14.1.1 , it crashes upon launch. I've run the script to completely uninstall it and reinstalled it, as well as wiped my Mac completely, but I still have the same issue. Please help, I need it urgently. Thank you.

    Based on the crash log, it looks like the error is caused by a stack buffer overflow in the SPSS software. A few things you could try:

    1. Update to the latest version of SPSS if you haven't already. There may have been a fix released.
    2. Try running SPSS in safe mode by holding the Shift key while launching the app. This may help isolate the issue.
    3. Since you mentioned you already tried reinstalling, also try deleting the SPSS preferences file:
      /Users/[your username]/Library/Preferences/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/29/User.prefs
    1. Contact IBM SPSS technical support with your crash log. As the developer of the software, they may have additional troubleshooting tips or be able to directly fix the issue in an update.
    2. As a last resort, try installing SPSS on a separate/clean user account on your Mac. This would isolate if there are any user specific configurations causing problems.

    Hopefully trying those steps helps resolve the frequent crashes. Let me know if the problem persists or the log points to any other potential fixes!

    @curtis. I had a similar problem when I updated to Sonoma 14.0, but when I updated to 14.1, SPSS stopped working again and won't recognize my license.

    I'm having the same issue, and the new hot fix isn't working (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7087505). Anyone manage to get around this yet? v29.01.0 on MacOS Sonoma 14.1.2 here

    Dear SPSS-Team,

    SPSS 29 is crashing immediately after start up. I have contacted apple after sending several crash reports, here is what Apple stated:

    "

    SPSS 29 crash on launch - Urgent help needed

    Crash reports have been sent several times to Apple.
    "Application Specific Information:
    stack buffer overflow"

    It is a waste of time to send crash reports to Apple. Contact the developer of SPSS. They are the only ones who can fix their app.

    "Unfortunately we will have to wait for IBM. The stack buffer overflow is a programming error that can allow program execution outside of the sandbox. This exception has been stopped in Sonoma and keeps the system secure. Only IBM can fix this. More info on the stack buffer overflow can be found here:"

    IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0 (20) and IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription shipped last Friday.   Perhaps a fresh install of the product is in order here:

    • Begin with Technote 522345 detailing the steps needed to completely uninstall your current SPSS Statistics/Statistics Subscription.
    • Download and install IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0. Here is the Download Document. At the very bottom are links for the client media in Fix Central.
