  • 1.  Suddenly stopped showing mean, SD etc

    Posted Fri May 05, 2023 10:17 AM

Apologies for the newbie post but in the middle of writing my thesis SPSS has suddenly stopped calculating or showing certain items in the output. I choose Analyse, choose Descriptive Statistics and Frequencies. and then in the options tick boxes for Mean (Central Tendency) and SD (Dispersion) and chose Continue and OK. When I run it the frequency table is fine but there is no sign of the options - mean and SD - that I have specified. One day it was working and the next it wasn't. I'm running v28.

Example of the incorrect output below:

I have no idea how to fix this so any help gratefully received as the thought of manual stats as well as writing up is the stuff of nightmares...

The mean and similar statistics would be in a separate table and should always be displayed by the Frequencies command.  The only way I can think of that this table would not appear if you have requested some statistics is if OMS is suppressing that output.  But you would have to have turned OMS on to do that.  Look at the lower right part of the status bar and see if it says OMS.  If so, run the command OMSEND or restart Statistics and try again.

If that isn't the case, use the Paste button in the dialog box to generate the syntax and post what you see in the Syntax Editor window.

Hi Jon - thank you so much. I can't see OMS displayed anywhere just Unicode on. Being a complete novice I am not entirely sure what you mean by the other suggestion - is this what you mean?

    FREQUENCIES VARIABLES=HowcomfortableareyouwiththescanningprocessshownforSimonChooseone
      /STATISTICS=STDDEV MEAN
      /ORDER=ANALYSIS.

To me that confirms mean and SD have been selected although they don't show

Of course, you need to check the appropriate boxes in the Statistics subdialog box, but first, go to Utilities > OMS Control Panel and make sure that there are no active OMS requests.  If there are, then end them in that dialog box or run an OMSEND command in a syntax window.
