  • 1.  How to migrate DS8000 to FS7300?

    Posted Sat March 11, 2023 10:05 AM

    Hi Community
I have a client who wants to migrate their current DS8000 platform to FS7300 with FCM modules.

Is there a procedure to execute this platform change?, considerations, restrictions, tools to migrate,

Thanks for the guidance and sorry if this is the wrong group for this question

    Hi,
It's also a question what the expectations are.
And what host types they use.
A good start point is to check the redbook for migrations, https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248470.html?Open

Hi @ROGER ERIKSSON , thank you for mentioning this Redbook, which I wasn't aware of, although I had to figure, it is stored on my laptop.

In this Redbook chapter 4.2 - Data migration using IBM Spectrum Virtualize Volume Migration wizard would be a good starting point.

I agree, that all other items you mentioned have to be considered thoroughly up front as well.

    Hi Diego,

Assuming you only have open systems hosts, and not mainframe, attached to the DS8000, then the easiest way would be externally virtualise the DS8000 under the FS7300. High-level overview would be:

    • Add SAN zones to allow DS8000 and FS7300 to talk to each other over the SAN fabrics
    • Create a storage pool in the FS7300 that utilises the DS8000
    • Create a new storage pool in the FS7300 as a migration target
    • Re-map your DS8000 volumes to the FS7300
    • Import the volumes as image mode disks on the FS7300
    • Map these disks from the FS7300 back to the original hosts
    • In the background create volume mirrors of the image mode disks to the new storage pool in the FS7300
    • Once the mirrors are all synced, break the mirrors and remove the image mode DS8000 copy
    • Decommission the DS8000

Again this is just high-level, there are some techie bits to do in between, but should all be documented in the Redbooks.

    Regards

Most operating systems support the following scenario :

           1. Present LUNS from new storage to host

          2. Mirror old storage LUNS to similar LUNS on new storage

          3. Remove mirror copy on old storage.

My preference goes for this approach because

    -  can be used to migrate from any to any storage (even different vendors)

    -  no application downtime needed during the entire migration process
