  • 1.  Decommissioning 'some' of the volumes in my FS7300 allocated to IBM i.

    Posted Wed November 01, 2023 03:58 PM

We significantly reduced the amount of disk space needed on one lpar of IBM i.  We have two hosts on the 7300 with 26 mapped volumes each for a total of 52 volumes.  This matches what I see on IBM i with WRKDSKSTS.  I know how to use STRSST on IBM i to see the disks.  I know how to deprovision the drives on the IBM i.  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/moving-data-dasd-removing-asp

I'm a real newbie with SAN stuff.

But does it make sense to try to balance the drives I remove between the two hosts?  Like I want to remove 17 volumes so should I remove 9 from one and 8 from the other?

How do I ensure that after I removed the drives from IBM i that I remove the right volumes on the FS7300?

On IBM i each drive has something like

This should match this unit on the FS7300 but I can't see how to confirm that.

I did find some more information in SST.  Some of the string of digits gets closer to matching the FS7300 but not enough to give me a real warm feeling you know?

    Hello Robert,

the necessary information is hidden in the location and serial number. You can find it in the details of the drive. The structure is relatively simple.

The location found in the details of the disk in the IBM i contains all the information such as system name, serial number of the flash system and the LUN. The serial number starts with 78 and is 7 digits long

The last three digits of the serial number correspond to the LUN.

In your example a 9223-22H is a Power 9, not a flash system. And that is the serial number of your Power 9.

In our case the disk drive location is:  U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C125-T0-W500507681011A8D7-L0019000000000000

We have a Power 10 9105-41B.  And 7856551 matches system value QSRLNBR.

Our flash system is a 4657-924 with a serial number of 78E3F4E

The disk drive serial number is:  Y438C40000F1

I have noticed that the serial number appears 8 times for DMPxxx multipath drives.  The documentation you pointed out to me says this.  It says the location code should be the same but the Cxxx differs and the long Wxxx... differs

    Y438C40000F1
    DMP259 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C125-T0-W500507681011A918-L0019000000000000

    DMP312 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C126-T0-W500507681012A8D7-L0019000000000000
    DMP362 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C127-T0-W500507681012A918-L0019000000000000
    DMP364 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C127-T0-W500507681012A8D7-L0019000000000000
    DMP415 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C128-T0-W500507681011A8D7-L0019000000000000
    DMP416 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C128-T0-W500507681011A918-L0019000000000000
    DMP260 U9105.41B.7856551-V4-C125-T0-W500507681011A8D7-L0019000000000000
The C125 can be seen on the HMC in Virtual Storage, Adapter View, Virtual Fibre Channel Adapters and can be used to determine which VIOS lpar ties to that.  In our case C125 and C127 are one VIOS lpar and C126 and C128 go to another VIOS lpar.  The HMC also shows the location which can be used to find the card slot and the port number

I am feeling more confident in taking the last two characters of the drive serial number, Y438C40000F1 and tying that to the last two columns of the Volume UID:  6005076810810548C0000000000000F1

    So that helps.

I haven't found any way to tie L0019000000000000 to anything on this screen:

Or should I just remove the 17 all from one host?

It is generally recommended to balance the drives you remove between the two hosts. I would recommend removing 9 volumes from one host and 8 volumes from the other. This will give you a good balance between the two hosts.
