  • 1.  Manual Switch Primary , Secondary while RSS exist

    Posted 12 days ago

I have a client running IBM Informix 12.14 in RedHat 7.6.
They have IDS Primary & IDs Secondary  in HQ Data Centre  while IDS RSS in  DRC Data Centre.
I didnt setup Control Manager. All this while I'm using manual via onmode command.

I always refer Art Kagel document how to swtch from PRI -SEC for failover and SEC-> for fallback. But that for only 2 server.
If I have RSS how do  I switch PRI become Secondary and Secondary become PRI by expecting RSS still remain.

Can somebody provide me the steps.

    Need an expert advise.

It's the same whether you have RSS secondaries or not. When the HDR secondary takes over as primary it will reach out to the RSS secondaries and make the connection basically saying "Yo, dude, talk to me now!" All is well.

One thing I will mention is if you stop the primary for any reason then wait for the RSS nodes to join the cluster with the new primaary BEFORE bringing up the old Primary as the HDR.

Otherwise the RSS can remain attached to the old primary (which is now the HDR) and will not witch over to the new primary,
This means they will not receive/apply new log records!

Absolutely agree with @David Williams; Do not wait for your RSS node to checkpoint before you convert your original Primary into your new HDR Secondary if you do not want to untangle spaghetti.

If you think you will not be able to complete the switch before the CKPTINTVL time configured in the RSS node ONCONFIG file has elapsed, then it is probably best to bring the RSS node down while you flip the Primary and HDR Secondary nodes and bring it back up after a successful switch.
