    Hello friends!

I contact them because I have an urgent problem to solve, and I have not been able to solve it for several days. I can't think of trying anything else.

    The problem is the following:
I have a 64-bit Windows 10 Pro, with an Informix 7.31 TD6 engine. I have this engine installed as a test, because if I need to make delicate changes to the production server, I first do them in my engine and if they work well, I pass them to the server in production. This engine works fine, but the application is developed in Clarion 5.5 that generates 16-bit executables.

So, if I need to access the application, I do it through a virtual machine with Windows 7 32-bit, created with VMware Workstation 15.5. The problem is that the application cannot connect to the engine from the virtual machine, the same happens to me with the SQL Editor. They throw me a mistake -908.
Until last week I had no problems connecting from the virtual machine; accessed the application and could make queries with the SQL Editor.

It happened that there was a Windows 10 update that deconfigured me the virtual machine, and based on that I migrated from Workstation 14 to 15.5 and from there started this problem.

The strange thing is that if I connect from the virtual machine with the server in production, the applications and the SQL Editor work perfectly.

I have come to think that the problem could be in the virtual machine, but when connecting to the other server, the idea didn't make much sense. I also tried a virtual machine in VirtualBox, and the same thing happens.

On top of my despair, I had come to think that the problem could be in the Informix password (10 characters), but if I run the SQL Editor from the physical machine, it works normally. That's why I discarded this last idea too.

The last thing I am thinking about is that I reinstalled the engine as an administrator, and I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall it because that Windows update broke the previous installation.

I beg you to help me, since I have only one day left to deliver a job.

Of course, I appreciate your attention.

    A hug from Argentina!

    Hello Gustavo,

I would do a simple port/telnet connectivity test from the client machine to your test server to check and see if the Informix TCP port you are using is open.   You may need to install telnet on the client if it is not installed already and then do:

    telnet <hostname>  <port>

    e.g.

    telnet  server123  1541

If you get connected, then this is not the issue, if it hangs or times out, this is an issue.   I would do the same test to your production server for comparison, since that works.

    Best regards,

    Hello Hal!
First of all, I want to thank you for your response.

Thank God they postponed the delivery of work for 3 days, for reasons beyond my control, so I am a little calmer.

I did what you suggested, I activated Telnet on the virtual machine and on the host machine.

When I tried to connect to port 1526 of the host machine from the client, it gave me an error, while when I connected to the server in production, the connection was established instantly.

I tried to do the same on the host machine, and the results were the same.

The funny thing is that both the Informix SQL Editor and the Table Editor, if executed from the host machine, work normally even though the port is not open.

Today I reinstalled the engine on the host machine, but the problem persists.

Can you think of any idea about the origin of the fault? Until last week it worked.

You're sure the Informix server is listening on an externally visible interface?

I agree with Paul, it sou is like the firewall is closing off that port from the client.

I thank you all for the answers.

In theory, the Informix port is not being blocked by any port, since I added an exception in Bitdefender 2020, which opens the port between the host and the virtual machine. But I really don't know in depth how the firewall of that product works.

Previously the host was protected by Windows Defender, and the port was open for the organization's network. Later I installed the Kaspersky Free (which does not come with a firewall), and everything continued to work normally.

Now, after reading Paul and Andreas' answers, and Art's confirmation, I am beginning to distrust Bitdefender.

I will try uninstalling it, and use Windows Defender again to try to free the port.

I will tell you the results.

I thank you again Hal, Paul, Andreas and Art.

    Dear Friends:

I ask you to excuse me for the delay, but the postponement in the original times meant a subsequent overload.

As promised, I was going to inform you if I solved the problem.

It is solved, and it turned out to be what you said from the beginning: the Firewall.

I uninstalled Bitdefender 2020, installed Trend Micro OfficeScan, which is an antivirus only, and does not invade like the others. And as a firewall I left Windows Defender.

    That's how everything was perfect.

I owe a big thank you to all of you, since without your help I would not have been able to solve it, since I was very moody and had my mind clouded and refused to solve the problem.
