  • 1.  Table Recycle Bin?

    Greetings, Family.

One of my users is asking about a feature he claims exists in Oracle: A sort of recycle bin for table recently dropped tables so that after the initial OhNo!second when you realize what you've just done, the table can be quickly restored.  Well, I've editorialized his description somewhat but you get the idea.  I told him about archecker but he knows about it and does not want to consider it, since it does take kinda long to pull the table back from the backup and then roll forward the logs entries on that table up to 1 minute before the finger-slip.

Has anyone heard of a feature like that in Informix. either currently or in the works?  Otherwise, please remind me where one can enter a feature request.  If you were an Informix marketing pro, how would you respond to that question? (My hat & cane, please; I need to do a tap dance.)

Of course, such a facility has its down side:  It won't free up the space of that table until the "recycle bin" is emptied.

And what would you do for an inadvertent truncate the wrong table owing to a typo?  Well, the analog in files would be >file and there 's no recycle help for that. There comes a point of "tough luck, friend".

    Hi Jacob

That looks like a cool feature, typically you want to post a Request for enhancement at that location

    https://ibm-data-and-ai.ideas.aha.io/?project=INFX

If Oxxcle has it, why not Informix ?

Please post your RFE and publish its URL here, so that we can vote for it

    Have a great week end

    Jacob:

The closest thing we have in Informix's realm would be an RSS secondary with a DELAY_APPLY set. The secondary can be configured to any changes after a delay. I have a client that runs an HDR secondary, two RSS secondaries, one each for reporting and analytics, and a third RSS on a two hour delay to allow for easy recovery from fumble finger errors like this.

    Thanks Art.

I think I'll simply post the URL of this thread to the Slack group where my user posted his question.  It is unlikely that my users have a time-delay RSS but this response is certainly likely to intrigue them.  Also, it might encourage some of them to join this forum.  Some pretty smart & knowledgeable folks.

The more users on this forum the better. It adds visibility inside IBM for Informix!
