Looking for how other people are using services in Apptio for business unit direct applications.

Travis, might want to clarify what is a "business unit direct application".

I came across something that may be related last week. Applications that are "supported" by business units outside of IT. The type of support I'm referring to is application functional support, critical for the App to be of value. Presenting an application TCO excluding these activities would be misleading, but the resources are not part of the IT organization.

The direction I'm taking here is to add a new type of expense (my TBMA is thinking about what this is), an estimate of the cost of that support originating from outside of IT. Note this will be an estimate, and lump sum. Clearly labeled in the TCO reports as such.

We have applications that make a product called Check Processing and within those applications we have infrastructure that we are charging out (servers, DBs, etc). I should mention we are only allocating infrastructure today.

Trying to tie this back to a service is somewhat confusing for us when it comes to the IT infra that supports that application. We were thinking to say something more generic like Servers/Win, Servers/AIX, etc as a service but I dont think that follows the TBM model. 

It looks like a perfect example of the ATUM model: Check Processing is your IT Service. The Service is made up of Service components (your applications), and those applications consume IT resource towers (compute in this example)

I do not think it is necessary to make immediately exact copy of TBM model. It should be a useful tool and in our organization we strictly balance TBM recommendation and expectation of our business partners. We take TBM model as recommendation and inspiration but when necessary to make changes due to data structure or specific output request we do it. What I am trying to say do not be afraid of building model differently from TBM recommendation now. I think it is more important to move forward. You can slowly improve it in the future.

Yeah, we currently have deviated from the typical model but just trying to get some ideas of how others are handling this scenario as we start looking at it.

This may not be what you're looking for - but we have the infra going to the apps - then the apps have capabilities that are tied to services - those apps that have caps/services in support of one operating company are sent the direct service allocation route - those supporting multiple opcos are sent the indirect route - that's how we move costs up our model to services, and then on to business units (operating companies).  We also have details at the app level to tell us what percentage of the app is in support of which opco if there are multiple ones supported.
