How to increase password character limit from 15

  • 1.  How to increase password character limit from 15

Product - Master Data Management SE

    MDM version  -  11.6

    Fix Pack (v11.X) or build version (10.X)  - 4

    Database Version - Exadata 12c

    Operating System - AIX

    WebSphere Version - 8.5.5.12

I  would like to know how to increase the password length limit from 15 to 25 or 30 characters. Our organization is implementing new security policy on password length and all the users are required to have minimum of 20 characters in their passwords. This is going to cause issues for our IBM MDM Inspector business users as MDM is supporting only max of 15 characters passwords.

Our MDM/ WAS is synced up with enterprise LDAP and users uses LDAP credentials to login to WAS or MDM inspector.

So, what are the steps we need to follow to make sure MDM/inspector allows passwords greater than 20 characters.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

. I appreciate your diligence in ensuring our systems align with the new security policies. To address the password length limitation in IBM Master Data Management (MDM) and Inspector, we need to follow a series of steps. Please find the detailed instructions below:

    Step 1: Backup and Documentation

Before making any changes, it's crucial to back up your current configurations and document the existing settings. This ensures a smooth recovery process in case any issues arise during the implementation.

Step 2: Accessing WebSphere Integrated Solutions Console (ISC)

    1. Open your web browser and navigate to the WebSphere Integrated Solutions Console using your designated URL (usually http://[ServerName]:[Port]/ibm/console).

    2. Log in with appropriate credentials.

    Step 3: Updating Security Settings

    1. In the left navigation pane, go to "Security" and select "Global Security."

    2. Under the "Authentication" section, click on "Password Requirements."

    3. Adjust the "Minimum Password Length" to your desired value (e.g., 20, 25, or 30 characters).

    4. Save the changes and restart WebSphere to apply the new settings.

    Step 4: Updating LDAP Configuration

Since your MDM/Inspector is synced with the enterprise LDAP, you should ensure the LDAP server also supports the increased password length. Follow these steps:

    1. Access the LDAP server configuration.

    2. Adjust the password policy to accommodate the desired password length.

    3. Save the changes and restart the LDAP server if necessary.

    Step 5: Testing

    1. After making these changes, perform thorough testing to ensure that users can log in successfully using passwords of the newly specified length.

    2. Check MDM Inspector functionality to confirm that the adjustments have not adversely affected any features.

    Step 6: Communication

Inform all MDM Inspector users about the changes in password policies. Consider creating a user guide or announcement on the company website to guide users through the transition.

Please note that these steps provide a general guideline, and your specific environment may have nuances that require additional consideration. It is advisable to consult the IBM MDM documentation and involve your IT security team in this process.

If you encounter any challenges during the implementation, do not hesitate to reach out for assistance.
