Gain insights into potential savings with the new Db2 Utility Compare Report in IBM Db2 Automation Expert for z/OS.

IBM Db2 Automation Expert for z/OS has been enhanced recently with a brand-new Db2 Utility Compare report feature. It examines utilities history and compares certain statistics over two similar periods of time. The Db2 Utility Compare report output can be used to show how changes to your system affect the execution of your utilities, along with the potential savings in CPU and elapsed time that leveraging Db2 Automation Expert can provide.

This feature ships in PTF UI97609 and requires Db2 13 function level FL504, and activation of object history using the ZPARM setting UTILITY_HISTORY=OBJECT.  This ZPARM ensures that the object level history is recorded for utility executions.  Db2 Utility Compare uses this data and your selection criteria to show the differences in utilities run, CPU, and elapsed time.

With the new Db2 Automation Expert for z/OS, you can implement best practices profiles and utilities automation capabilities.  This can ensure you are executing utilities only when they are needed.  The new compare report can provide insight into how movement to Db2 Automation Expert can affect your utility maintenance windows and show potential savings and efficiencies in your maintenance runs.

The optional parameters give you flexibility to determine the utilities and jobs to be compared so you do not include ad-hoc runs that will skew your comparison.  You can filter by the userid, jobname, and the utilities that are important to your comparison.  The userid and jobname parameters can be generic specifications and most of the controls can have multiple specifications.

As the screenshot below shows, the Db2 Utility Compare report compiles system times of utility executions for two different time periods, followed by the number and types of utilities executed during those periods. This will show how the changes to your system or profiles have affected execution times and CPU utilization. This insight allows you to better identify the potential benefits of running automated utilities with the Db2 Automation Expert and identify where adjustments may be needed for maximum efficiency. This information provides you with evidence that your updates are helping to limit the utilities executions to just those that are needed, so you are not wasting valuable CPU time and resources.
