  • 1.  Removal of RDP and loss of access to file system in PAoC

    Posted 11 days ago

    Hi,

For some of our customers the main issue with the loss of the RDP session in PAoC is the loss of access to the file system.  Whilst the new File Manager does provide some space for us to load and download files easily there seems to be a couple of critical use cases that I've not seen referenced by IBM.

    1. Promotion of objects from dev to live.  This is something that it is trivial at the moment and modellers can easily self-serve manually copying objects around the data directory.  Are there plans to include TM1 objects in the Lifecycle Manager and will this be in place before the demise of the RDP sessions?
    2. Manual ad-hoc back-ups.  With access to the file system it is easy to take manual ad-hoc back-ups of the database and restore them.  Importantly this is self-serve activity which is important as recovering from a back-up is normally time critical.  What are IBMs plans with respect to replacing this kind of functionality?

Removal of the legacy clients is now functionally covered by PAW and PAfE but I do not believe removal of access to the file system has the same functional cover in place.

    Hi Steven,

Thanks for your questions. It is true that the Remote Desktop is used for a large range of File Management Use cases which we have anticipated in advance of the removal.

    1. The planned enhancements that are coming to the file manager, will include the ability to manipulate files and move them between environments. This feature will be available before the September shut down of the Rich Tier.
    2. Access to the S:\ drive and all the TM1 Database directory folders and files will be added (for selected users) to the File Manager experience in Workspace, in an upcoming release this summer. This will allow you to see all your TM1 Database directories though the UI and use the zip/unzip feature just released in SC95 to zip up a TM1 Database Directory for backup purposes.

    Hope this helps.

Just to confirm that FTP(S) is available and details can be found in the Welcome pack to gain access to files and folders

In the limited time I've been looking at this I cannot find an FTP client that can display remote to remote site for direct file transfer (i.e. You would have to download a local copy from Dev and then Upload that local copy to Prod)

This workflow could be improved with Powershell/ tool of choice but I'm looking forward to the file manager enhancements and the ability to use a single interface to model and administer TM1 databases

    Hi Edward,

Yes, we can confirm the FTP service will still be available once the rich tier is removed.  There is also still an 'S' drive (which is really the same file system that is exposed by FTP).  The TM1 databases will continue to see the 'S' drive as they do today.  You are also correct that there is no FTP client that can directly move files between one FTP service and another. In order to move files directly from one environment to another you would need an FTP client in each environment. The Cognos Command Center Agent that is installed on the Data Tier system has an FTP client.  It is possible to use Cognos Command Center to orchestrate movement of files between Planning Analytics environments using the FTP tasks.

As Tracy mentioned we are working an enhancement to the File Manager that will allow you to move files between environments.

Tracy also published a FAQ with a bit more detail here: https://community.ibm.com/community/user/businessanalytics/blogs/tracy-peppy1/2024/05/07/planning-analytics-on-cloud-rich-tier-removal-faq?CommunityKey=8fde0600-e22b-4178-acf5-bf4eda43146b
