  • 1.  PAW and TM1 Application Server Gateway URI

    Hello Community,

i am relatively new to the Cognos Analytics world and was first struck by the product range.

I am currently in the process of installing Planning Analytics Workspace (2.0.57) and I came across TM1 Application Server Gateway URI in the Administration Tool.
I have installed it as in the example but unfortunately I get an error message during validation:
    URI: http://tm1dev:9510

    TM1 Application Server Gateway URI
Error: Server responded with status code 404:
    Not Found

    Now my question:

    1. which functions must Cognos Analytics have activated/installed so that I do not get an error here?

    2. which functions are enabled in Planning Analytics Workspace?

    3. if I do not connect to the application server, will PAW not work properly?

    thanks for your help.

The following IBM URL indicates that the newly installed TM1Web(Spreadsheet Services) may now create an error in the PAW Administration Tool, but we can ignore it. https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSD29G_2.0.0/com.ibm.swg.ba.cognos.tm1_inst.2.0.0.doc/t_tm1_inst_tm1web_windows.html

Hello Walter, thanks for your reply.

Did I understand you correctly? The Application Gateway has no function in PAW?
According to my colleagues we have never used TM1Web, let alone configured it.

As I have understood it so far, the application gateway provides the functions TM1Web and Cognos Insight.
As we have never used them, we do not need the application gateway in PAW, as PAW's new features provide similar capabilities.

    Hi Leonard,

In PAW2057, I believe the reference to TM1Web in PAW Administration for "TM1 Application Server Gateway URI " is still needed, but the "404" error from trying to validate the PAW administration setting will generate an error that can be ignored. Proceed with the "Update" button then start PAW. PAW still needs TM1Web(Spreadsheet Services) to render websheets, so it should needs a valid "TM1 Application Server Gateway URI " to TM1Web. But the PAW Administration check on "TM1 Application Server Gateway URI " chokes because PMHUB is not part of the latest TM1Web.

The TM1Web part of the web tier was part of the "IBM Cognos TM1" Windows service on Windows servers until PAL 2.0.9.2/PASS 2.0.55 came out. Then installing TM1Web with a separate installer created an additional service, "IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Services" that is solely TM1Web. The old "IBM Cognos TM1" is for the remaining portion of the TM1 Web Tier (TM1 Application Gateway, TM1 Application Server, Cognos Access Manager). It supports the vaguely named "TM1 Applications" that is the old Contributor style web interface for TM1 workflow managed by the other TM1/PA admin tool, Performance Modeler. What is left of PMHub sits in "IBM Cognos TM1". "TM1 Applications" is not nearly as popular of a component as regular PA/TM1, TM1Web, PAW, and even Architect, so I have left the "IBM Cognos TM1" service off for a while in my dev environment. I'm not there yet with prod.

Since the old "IBM Cognos TM1" has split into the new "IBM Cognos TM1" and "IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Services" windows services when they are installed, the use of port 9510 becomes tricky. The documentation recommends changing TM1Web to use 9511 since it is its own service and instance of Windows Liberty Profile and leave 9510 for the much less popular "TM1 Applications", but I disagree with that. Port 9510 is part of TM1/PA canon for TM1Web, and I'm changing "TM1 Applications" to use 9511, but I still need to stress test that...before I just turn it off an ignore it. I may need it on someday for a client.

Since you are new to PA, I'd avoid the old "TM1 Applications" stuff that are part of the "IBM Cognos TM1" service and leave that service off. Cognos Configuration will start the "IBM Cognos TM1" service, but I believe it has no control over "IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Services" (TM1Web). Maybe the memory setting drifts through, I'm not sure. Need to test, but I doubt it does.

    Hi Leonard,

As Walter already mentioned you should be pointing that to the web endpoint for TM1Web (Planning Analytics Spreadsheets Service) .  It will still throw an error message which you can ignore.  We will fix that error message in a future version.

The TM1Web endpoint is required if you want to use Websheets inside of a book in Planning Analytics Workspace.  Everything else in Planning Analytics Workspace will still work if the TM1Web endpoint is incorrectly configured.  If you are not planning on using Websheets in Planning Analytics Workspace you can leave that endpoint empty or incorrectly configured.
