I reckon till CA 11.0.6 had save and load option in Data Module but this future was later depreciated.

This feature was very handy for large datasets.

Having this feature would speed up the performance of the reports and dashboards and it will be one stop shop instead of using work around CA tools like Datasets, Cubes etc..

Does CA has any plan to reinstate this option back in one place like some other BI tools in the market?

A clarifying question first - are you referring to the ability to create a data set specifically? With 11.1 we increased the size of recommended data set sizes to 'the single digit millions' of resulting rows.
When you create a data set, say from a data module using the 3 dots menu, Create Data set. Once you have created the definition of the data set, you can save it, or save and load data. You do not have to load the data, you can use the scheduling capability in the data set definition properties, schedule tab. This enables you to schedule the refresh of data.

    Hopefully this addresses your issue.

Hi @Michael McGeein, I am trying to make a case within my group to upgrade to 11.1.4 (from 11.0.13) and this feature to define a data module and load its content daily/monthly to a dataset would really help. This is a feature of PowerBI that a lot of people like but we could not yet achieve in Cognos, except with cubes. Is there a YouTube video or some other demo of how this works in 11.1.4 so I can show that around in my larger team?

    Thank you, Adrienne

One more question @Michael McGeein do you know if it is possible to create an event for loading the dataset from a module? @Torben Noer, this would be another case for Events. Ideally, I could define a data module (possibly from multiple Oracle databases and possibly a few uploaded Excel files) then base on when new data is loaded into the database (checked by an event) reload the dataset and notify the team about the new data. This would allow my end user to do their own dashboarding or just run/check report views that we created for them. Is this possible with 11.1.4 (we are on prem, not cloud).

    Thank you!

    Hi Adrienne,
Keep in mind that the Data Module is just the Metadata - no data is actually ever "loaded" into it.  I typically recommend that you create the Data Set as an extract based on the Data Module, which it sounds like the approach you are referring to.  You can then schedule the data set to be refreshed on some interval OR based on an external event.  The external event can be driven by a trigger using the out of the box scheduling.  I am sure there is a way to intermediate and Event Studio agent here, but as far as I know there is no direct integration between Event Studio and Data Set refresh.  Either way you would need to have some database-driven procedure that alerts the Cognos service (trigger) and i think this would fit your use case pretty well.  The only caveat is how dynamic your Excel data is, since there is no way I know of to automate the Cognos Data Set refresh based on changes to the underlying Excel data - in fact, you would need to manually refresh the uploaded data in Cognos each time the Excel source changes.  If you'd like to review, I have an 11.1.4 sandbox and would be happy to do a quick web meeting with you!

Thanks @Albert Valdez for the help. It seems I really need to get my team to upgrade us to 11.1.4 to take full advantage of the datasets and dashboarding. I keep running into all kinds of limitations in 11.0.13

We are on Cognos 11.0.12, we use datasets and modules a lot and they work great.

Many clients these days would like to use one toolset (for ETL and Reporting) for better scalability, resourcing, reduce licensing and costs. As the Cognos Data Manager is decommissioned now.

If you are trying to achieve some of the ETL concepts like incremental load, slowly changing dimension etc. May be you have to be expert in writing free form SQL to denormalise transaction tables in data module but it would be good to see some of these features are added in the future releases of CA Data Modules and Dataset like some of its one toolset competitors.
