  • 1.  Can I change from replication layer to storage layer on V9000

    Posted Thu March 21, 2024 05:24 AM

    Hello,

I'm looking to migrate from V9000 to FS7300.

Normally, I'd configure the new storage as "replication" layer and the old storage as "storage" layer and then simply migrate the volumes.

As V9000 is basically an SVC header can I change this to storage layer?

I recall in the distant past I used the migratetoimage command to migrate from SVC to V7000.

    Thanks

    Glenn

    Glenn,

    Maybe this will help: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/flashsystem-v9000/8.3.x?topic=overview-system-layers

Why not using the data Migration Feature builtin in all Virtualize based machines?

This is exactly what I would like to do but to do so I need:

    V9000 in storage layer

    FS7300 in replication layer

As I mentioned in my original post I'm not sure if it's possible to change the V9000 to storage layer as it's controller is SVC.

That's exactly what I want to do but do this I'd need to change the layer on the FS7300 to repliation (no problem there) and the layer on the V9000 to storage.

Going back to my first post, can the V9000 controller be changed to storage layer as It's basically an SVC and I believe that an SVC can only be replication layer.

Thanks for this but I am very familiar with that page and the layer settings.

I'm sure that I've been told in the past that SVC can only be a replication layer device. I'd that's correct then I'd also expect V9000 can only be a replication device.

    Hi Glen,

the reason you can't change the layer in SVC is that IBM don't want to/can't support SVC under SVC/Virtualize for various reasons. The question is whether this makes any sense at all. Martin's option probably won't work because if it really is a V9000, you can only upgrade to 8.3.1, the feature isn't available until 8.4.2 and most of the limitations weren't fixed until 8.5 and later.

MetroMirror is also out of the question, the 7300 would have to be on 8.5.1 and the V9 on 8.3.1. That will probably mean a manual downgrade and if the 73 is new and possibly shipped with FCM4, you want/need the arrays to be created with >= 8.6.2.0.

At the moment I only have two good options:
    1. vDisk migration, where the 73 is virtualized under the V9000, not the other way around.
      * Internal vDisk mirror to an image mode disk
    2. application or operating system migration, for example with VMware.

    Regards Patrik

    Patrik,

Thank you. At least you have confirmed what I thought that SVC cannot have it's layer changed.

When V7000 first came out I recall migrating a customer from SVC based storage to V7000 using the SVC "migratetoimage" command by presenting the new V7000 volumes to the SVC and the existing SVC volumes to the V7000.

Any thoughts on using this method for V9000 to FS73000 migration?

btw, All the hosts are either AIX or Linux.

Im not so AIX or Linux firm but VolumeGroup Mirroring should work for, be careful with the boot device. And remove the old volumes afterwards. Google or the AIX community will help:

Linux has too many options when it comes to the file system and LVM. But even here you can quickly find useful results.
