What’s new in DataPower Operations Dashboard v1.0.8

By Fernando Barsoba posted Fri July 20, 2018 03:15 PM

We are pleased to announce the release of DataPower Operations Dashboard (DPOD) v1.0.8. IBM’s monitoring and problem determination solution for applications that are secured and optimized by DataPower Gateways. DPOD also integrates with IBM’s comprehensive API management solution for the entire API lifecycle, API Connect. The latest version 1.0.8 reaches an important milestone for our team, as it incorporates improvements around several major areas such as new Application Monitoring Management (APM) functionality, UX/UI, and integration with API Connect 2018. Let’s look at these new features in more detail.

Transaction Monitoring

Extended Transactions, which are transactions that span more than one monitored devices/services, are now being tracked in a non-intrusive way over HTTP protocol, without the need for processing policy instrumentation.

Application Monitoring (APM)

Integration with APM tools is one of our strategic directions. In v1.0.8 we ave implemented one of a kind built-on TCP connector to Splunk. We are providing a DPOD application for Splunk as implementation reference, for IBM DataPower firmware 7.7.1 and later. Check out these screenshots!

Other improvements in our APM support include publishing more analytical data fields, and simplify the setup of APM integration implementation.

And last but not least, our new APM health check for the DataPower infrastructure, an overall health overview for all gateways according to user defined metrics. We are providing a superior UX to drill-down to view the device's health in the last 60 minutes.

The System Health dashboard provides an overview of all devices health state based on user-defined metrics. The dashboard is composed of multiple cards, each representing the health of a device, optionally divided into device groups. In addition, the dashboard displays the DPOD health state based on Internal Health Alerts.

Performance

We have introduced a new capability to dramatically increase DPOD's performance to the 10s of thousands of transactions per second or TPS (which in DPOD processing translates into hundreds of thousands of syslog records per second!). You can now use our new Log Target Analysis Levels setting, aka as "TPS slider" to configure the granularity of the data per transaction that you want to collect. Just do this during log target setup, and you are set to go to boost DPOD TPS limit!

Integration with IBM API Connect

DPOD v1.0.8 new supports the latest version of IBM market-leading API management solution, API Connect 2018.x. You can now monitor and troubleshoot your policy enforcement points (gateways) in your API Connect infrastructure if they are running in Multi-Protocol Gateway (MPGW) mode.

We have also added new DPOD roles for access control to API Connect fields such as API name, Space and Plan names. And you can now set API Connect views as the default system view if you are predominantly going to be monitoring your API Connect infrastructure. In order to improve this experience, we have also added more dashboards to the API Connect view such as the new Service URL/URI Calls panels.

DockerHub support

We are glad to announce that DPOD is on DockerHub! You can now download our developer edition image directly from the popular cloud-based registry service. Just go to the DPOD repository, and deploy our operations dashboard!

UX/UI Improvements

We have improved our UX/UI on different ways. Now all dashboards can be exported to a CSV file, while in our previous version only a subset provided this functionality. Also, we can add asterisk wildcard to filter domain names. We have added new APIs to create WS-M subscriptions. And we have new alert on more than 5 API Connect APIs with latency above X ms.

From a systems perspective, there is a device resources page now shows Ethernet interfaces statistics, indicating Tx/Rx errors. Also, administrators can use a new page to delete transactions logs that are stored in DPOD, and we have added an option to disable local user repository (available in DPOD v1.0.7.1) that is part of our GDPR ready work.

Hello Syed, the API Gateway service support will come in 3Q2019. I'm afraid at this point only the v5C compatibility mode is supported. We need DataPower firmware support to fully capture logs from the API Gateway service.
