What is contained in the "App Dev" and "App Run" costs?

  • 1.  What is contained in the "App Dev" and "App Run" costs?

    Posted Fri June 10, 2016 12:38 PM

I couldn't find the definition for what is contained in the "App Dev" and "App Run" costs the "Total Application Spend" chart.  Is it based on the IT Towers?

Here's where I am talking about...  From the Reporting Home dashboard, under the "Apps & Services" section, click on "Application TCO".  The dashboard shown should be on the "Total Application Spend" tab.  Look on the chart titled "Total Application Spend".  There is a stacked bar chart that shows spend on "App Dev" and "App Run".  What costs are in scope for the "App Dev" and "App Run" respectively.

Here's a picture from the Reference project...

    Hi Mark,

App Dev and App Run are 2 out of box metrics defined on application level depending on the drivers. App Dev can be labor costs allocated through Application/App Dev Sub tower or direct costs from a specific project. App Run is everything else other than App Dev expenses, to support and maintain that specific application. So the total should give us the total app cost. When you look at the help for these sub tower definitions:

    Application Development

Resources involved with the analysis, design, development, code, test and release packaging services associated with application development projects

Application Support & Operations The operations, support, fix and minor enhancements associated with existing applications

    Hope this was helpful!

A little more on this topic...

The OOTB "App Dev" metric is created by setting a tag to an allocation line on the modeling surface.  This creates a corresponding metric on the Metrics tab.  The "App Run" metric is equal to Cost minus App Dev.  This image depicts the standard reference project tag setting for App Dev:

The tag is set for all costs being allocated from the IT Resource Towers object to the Applications object where the sub tower is equal to App Dev.  Some customers, however, choose to customize the App Dev tag by setting it to other allocation lines, thus redefining the App Dev metric.
