You're seeing this error because the selected sample project isn't compatible with the DataPower Nano Gateway.
The `Load sample projects` option loads sample projects created for different gateway types, including DataPower Gateway, DataPower Nano Gateway, and webMethods Gateway.
Please select a sample project with a name starting with `DPNano`. These samples are specifically designed to work with the Nano Gateway and should allow you to stage/publish successfully.

Apologies about this - this particular sample API tutorial was built for API Connect v10 (with DataPower API Gateway) and still needs to be updated for version 12. Whilst it doesn't use gateway script it is written specifically for DataPower and not Nano.
For v12 within the trial you have the option in API Studio to load sample projects that can be used with the provided Nano Gateway.

Thanks for sharing the screenshot. It confirms what I mentioned earlier: the Gateway Nano does not support Gateway Scripts. Because of this, the Orders example will not work. If you check the flow, you will see it includes several Gateway Script definitions and other nodes that are not available in the Nano version.
I suggest reaching out to your IBM contact to ask for access to a different environment. As I understand it, the Nano is the only gateway available in that trial environment.
