  • 1.  Storage to server mapping

    Posted 12/01/15 06:50 PM

    Hi, Everyone,

My company is about to start our Apptio workshops for the full implementation of Cost Transparency module.  A couple of our sites with a tool like EMC ViPR SRM can give us storage to server mapping data easily, but the majority of our sites don't have tools like this.

I'd like to hear which approaches have worked well for your companies for compiling storage to server mapping data from different sites with various kinds of tools.  Do you recommend some specific tools for this?

    Thanks !

    Jean

    Hi Jean,

The community has been running some weekly contests over the last month regarding data collection and you may find this link useful:

    I hope that helps!

    Hi Jean,

Can you please advise how you have proceeded from here.

I understand EMC ViPR SRM would be great in determining the service level categorisation of your storage, which can also be completed with other vendor tools such as OnCommand Insight from NetApp and IBM TPC amongst others.

What you are looking to achieve is the connection from the type of storage protocol it used and what the target type is, i.e. is it a Hypervisor, therefore going to a Datastore or RDM (raw device mapping).

Depending on the size of the environment and different storage vendors within the environment there are different approaches. I am sure your Apptio team you can liaise with will advise you on the best approach forward.

    Thanks,

    Con Prountzos
