  • 1.  savlib, virtual tape ¿brms?

    Posted Wed December 13, 2023 05:13 PM

Hello, I am using a virtual tape but I send the following message in the log: Library QBRM added to library list.
Is it necessary to use brms? Or can I skip it?

    Dear Miguel

When you install BRMS in your IBM i system, by design. you will see several messages form BRMS whenever you do save/restore operations. You should pay attention to BRMS-related messages only when you use BRMS for save/restore/media management purpose.  Otherwise, you can generally ignore the messages or just uninstall BRMS.

    Hi Miguel,

If you have BRMS installed on the system i suggest to start using BRMS as it is a very good product. It maintains a good backup /recovery repository which is very handy to review to time to time. Unlike native save where you have to use DSPTAP to find out the saved objects. Otherwise you can just ignore these messages related to QBRM added to library list.

    Regards

    Rohit

It is not "necessary" to use BRMS.  Back when I used a virtual tape image catalog I did though.  Then I could ftp that image catalog to another system where there was a physical tape and do a DUPMEDBRM.  This kept track of objects which was easily retrievable by WRKOBJBRM.

The reason you are getting that message is because BRMS requires that you install 5770SS1-18-Media and Storage Extensions.  This adds hooks into all the save commands.  Kind of like exit point programs.  If it didn't, then how would BRMS know that you used one of the tapes listed in WRKMEDBRM for a save outside of BRMS?
