  • 1.  Retrieve V7R1 Keys

    Posted 2 days ago

    Hello IBMi Champs,

I am writing regarding a legacy IBM Power8 server running IBM i V7R1, which is now out of support. IBM is no longer providing extended support for either the operating system or the hardware. However, the customer retains this machine to host a legacy application during its phased migration to a new ERP system.

My concern is disaster recovery. If the OS becomes corrupted and I need to rebuild the LPAR from its last full save, I will be unable to apply the V7R1 activation keys, as they are not currently in my possession. While the LPAR is currently running without issue, this poses a significant risk.

Could you please advise if there is any way to retrieve or secure the V7R1 activation keys now, for use in a future recovery scenario? Your guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Hello Nadeem,

if my memory doesn't fail me, you should be able to retrieve any kind of an IBM i related license key through the ESS website - https://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/ess/index.wss.

You should be able to login using your IBM ID and after you register yourself into the system with a country code/customer number related to your system you should be able to retrieve the keys assigned to this customer number through the Software Keys and Subscription Codes -> IBM i Software Keys option.

    Hi Michal,

I attempted this method, but the IBM ESS portal returned an error stating "IBM Keys not found." Consequently, I am exploring alternative solutions.

    Hi.

    Have you tried using DSPLICKEY?
You can easily retrieve the keys currently on the system with this command.
You can then print and save them.

If you have the MGToolkit installed, run a syssnap to get everything about that system into a folder in the IFS that can be downloaded and saved.

Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, an AT&T 5G smartphone
    Get Outlook for Android

    Nadeem,

Hi, as this is all about Disaster Recovery, the 70-day "grace period" for OS LPPs should see you through shouldn't it?

You can run the DSPLICKEY command to display/print the license keys on the existing system.

to get a current list of keys i can think of two ways:

    call QSFWINV *PRINT
    DSPLICKEY OUTPUT(*LICKEYFILE)

    Try using:

    CALL QSFWINV *PRINT

That should allow you to obtain a copy of the keys from the 7.1 system.

    All the best,

    Si.
