  • 1.  Check in-use IBMi License product

    Posted Tue July 09, 2024 07:43 AM

One of my customers has installed many IBM i license products on an IBM i V7R1 (P08) server and is now planning to move to a V7R5 (P10) server. As you know, many license products have reached End of Support (EOS) in V7R5 and are not available for installation. However, the customer insists that they must have all the same license programs on the P10 (V7R5) server as they had on the P08 (V7R1) server.

Please advise on how I can check the currently in-use license programs in the V7R1 (P08) setup so I can remove any programs that are not in use. This will help save costs for the customer and save time when ordering and managing license programs with IBM.

    Dear Nadeem

At IBM i 7.5, very many IBM i SW products are now free of charge whereas they were not free in 7.1.  You should check how your customer pays for IBM i SW product on the new P10 server with IBM i 7.5. If they pay for 7.5 SW products anew (abandoning all SW products from P8 server at 7.1), then there is much less concern about the SW cost.

At IBM i 7.1, you run WRKLICINF command and press F11 until you see "usage count" column. Any product with non-zero usage count is the one being used in that machine BUT keep in mind that

    1. There are some IBM i SW products that do NOT appear in WRKLICINF because they are free of charge but are always or usually used such as TC1 (TCP/IP) and QU1 and a few other.
    2. WRKLICINF does not display SW products that are not managed by IBM Rochester (such as those from IBM SW group) and you need to ask product owner how to check if it is used in that machine or not.
    3. To see a full list of installed SW (not necessarily used) in IBM i, you use the command DSPSWRSC but this does not display usage information.  The list you see in WRKLICINF is a subset of what you see in DSPSWRSC.

I also attach IBM i licensed program list for 7.1 and 7.5 for you to compare which one from 7.1 is no longer supported in 7.5.    Keep in mind that some non-support IBM i SW products can still run in higher IBM i release that they are not supported. It's just that you are on your own if you encounter any issue with them.  Not support does not always mean it will not run.

I could swear that I submitted an update yesterday...

Along with what Satid said I also said some things like:
    - Check each Memo To Users for 7.2, 7.3, 7.4 and 7.5.  See:  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=documentation-memo-users
There's a "Change Version" box on the left to get to the other releases
    - Read about what licensed programs were changed, or removed at https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=users-licensed-programs
Again, check each and every previous version.  Caution:  Some of these should be removed prior to your upgrade to 7.5.  For just one example of why read the blue highlighted boxes at:  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=lp-system-manager-i-5770sm1-managed-system-services-i-5770mg1-products-are-withdrawn
    - Read each version in the Upgrade Planning at:  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/upgrade-planning

What may be really hidden in the weeds is that some options do not simply install nor upgrade with the standard menu options anymore.  One example is DNS server.  In 7.5 you also have to install some open source packages using techniques known well to those in the open source world but completely strange to IBM i only administrators.  That, and DNS server is becoming completely unsupported on IBM i 7.5 soon.  You may know this as option 31.
