  • 1.  Retail Application Interface Suite (RAIS) on V7R5

    Posted 9 days ago

    Hi all,

My customer is running Retail Application Interface Suite (RAIS) 5X99RAI V5R2 on V7R4 TR11.
They want to upgrade to V7R5 and are planning to upgrade a Dev/Test partition this week.
I don't know if there is a formal support statement.
Does anyone have any experience with RAIS V5R2 on IBM i V7R5?  Good or bad.

    Regards,

    Dear Lars

I doubt that you will receive any response that it is definitely supported.

In my long past experience as an IBM i tech specialist, when my customers had the need to upgrade IBM i release but their applications had NO formal support for the new target IBM i release, the only sensible way is to set up a test server/LPAR running the target IBM i release and restore the production data and do thorough application tests. Most of the cases were successful. For a few of them, a few errors were encountered but a check in the source codes of the problematic programs showed that certain very old code syntax (mostly RPG and CL) were used that were no longer supported in the target IBM i (mostly indicated in IBM i Memo To Users documents) but we were able to modify the code to use the more proper syntax most of such cases.   Since your customer upgrade from V7R4 to V7R5, I would expect a smooth test.  If you have time, reviewing V7R5 Memo To Users can be helpful in case you encounter any problem during the test.

    Hi Satid,

Thanks for your comprehensive response.  That's consistent with my experience and expectations.  We have reviewed the Memo to Users, as you suggested, but I find it's usually not until you upgrade and test that you realise that you have code that matches the changes described in the Memo to Users 😊.  Luckily, we have a Dev/Test LPAR available.

I was just hoping that someone else with RAIS might have experienced the upgrade to V7R5 and have some stories to tell.  I guess this time we'll be the trail blazers, and we'll have some stories to tell.  Hopefully they will be good stories and hopefully I'll remember to share them here.

    Hi Lars,

I had in the past the same questions and concerns for RAIS V5R2 on IBM i 7.3 for one of my retail clients. For this I had contacted IBM support back in 2022 and I got
an IBM contact, Terry Hennessy <tkhenn@us.ibm.com. IBM response back then, was the following:

"Last fall a decision was made to withdraw support for the RAIS product by the end of this year.  No new maintenance contracts are being created nor existing ones extended.   This also means that new license keys will no longer be generated.  For those customers that want to continue to use the RAIS product IBM will provide, at no cost, the source code along with a document describing how to build the product"

So, if the above is still correct, and I am pretty sure it is, you could try to contact IBM support or send to Tery an email (assuming he is still an IBMer) asking for RAIS source code and relevant build documentation.
If you get no answer, I might be able to find this material for you, from my client.

    regards,

    Nikos Metaxatos

    Hi Nikos,

Thank you for some great info.  Unfortunately, Terry's email address is no longer valid.

I have opened a support call.  Let's wait and see what they come back with.

I'm also double checking with my customer - perhaps they already have the source code etc.  They may have needed it to manage license keys when moving to new hardware.

The message on the new license key being no longer provided is a serious show stopper in this case.  It is prudent for Lars to contact IBM Support on this point before proceeding any further.

If IBM is "willing" to give the source and build information, this seems like a *perfect application to give to the public in a GITHUB repository.

without any IBM support companies would be able to "learn" from each other about any issues.

    Thanks Satid & Bryan,

We probably don't need the license key for the 7.4 to 7.5 release upgrade, but I expect we'll need to do something next time we migrate to new hardware.  Presumably with the source code and setup documentation, we'll be able to bypass the license checking.  Or if we're lucky, the license checking for RAIS was removed with the license simplification.

GITHUB is not part of my world at the moment.  But when we get the source code I'll investigate.

IBM support was not very helpful some I'm now pursuing my in-country IBM contacts.
