R12 Data Schema/Data Map

  • 1.  R12 Data Schema/Data Map

    Posted 05/14/18 08:46 AM

    Hi,

Could anyone tell me where I can find a Data Schema/Data Map or any visual documentation which will show how the files and tables fit together for out of the box Cost Transparency in R12?

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Thank you for your question. I have searched and not found any information within TBM Connect so i will ask my colleagues.

I will respond as soon as i can.

    Regards

    Hi Phillip,

We're working on this.  Are you interested in seeing a fully built out model for example?  Can you give me a bit more information or context?

    Hi @Jenny Goodwin,

As I'm still fairly new to Apptio having a diagram or something visual which shows how the files and tables link together would be really useful. This would help me when diagnosing fall-out or understanding why data is not flowing from one table to another.

I would particularly like to see the file relationships of an out of the box Cost Transparency model and a fully built out model would be great.

    Thanks,

    Phil

This is a good ask and makes sense Phillip but I don't think we have anything already created with that information.  @Debbie Hagen is going to move this post to some of the CT pages on community and see if we can't identify some information we are not aware of yet.

I've moved it to the CT Product Knowledge base.  Hopefully someone there can help us determine whether there is such a document/diagram and if not, perhaps we can get it added as a feature request.

If you hear anything back can you pass it along? I'm looking for the same thing!

    Hi @Derek Campbell,

I haven't received any documents yet but will forward you anything I receive.  I'm sure this question must have come up before, so there ought to be something available.

@Michael Moulsdale do you know of anything that exists that would meet what these guys are looking for?

Noticed after the 12.4 upgrade that if you have one table checked out in TBM Studio, then click on any table name in the left side navigator, names of tables related to the selected one become bold.  Not a full solution but it can help speed up pinpointing dependencies in the absence of a map.

    Thank you Jessica,

Although I'd noticed that some table names were in bold I didn't  know why.  This certainly sounds like a helpful tip which I can make use of.

    We're using 12.4.1.x.

I tried following the suggestion of checking out a table, click a table on the left, etc...none of my tables' name are displayed in bold format.

Although unrelated...I did see a feature I'd been hoping for a long time...ability to move a table into a different category/group. YAY!!! ;-)

Is this what you're talking about @Jessica Green?

It bolds the data sets that are appended to the one I selected and the model table that is looking at that data set.  Doesn't show me other types of relationships like relationships created through allocations or joins, but it's a great way to see what is directly tied to my Labor Master Data Table.

    Hey Phil et al,

So I still think this could be a useful tool yo have, but I've been thinking about your request and actually just finished watching @Jonathan Strauss's new Deconstructing a Report in R12 course.  It made me think.  If you are looking for a Data Schema, to help diagnose fallout or understand why $ aren't flowing, have you tried using the Model Report and the Model Fallout tools in R12 for that?  Those two tools are fantastic for helping you to understand where your over and under allocations are occurring as well as helping you to narrow down where the allocations are coming from or going to, line item by line item you can see what's been unallocated or where you've allocated something twice.

It's kind of like a live data schema table because you can change what you view by to better understand where the value is coming from.  Think back to Backpack 2 and Backpack 3 in your RTBMA courses.

Ok guys!  Super exciting news - until recently we couldn't get into the "backend" of our reference project but NOW you can!  This is super helpful.  To get to the reference project go into  your CT project and then click the cog wheel in the upper right corner next to your name, click Reference Applications, on the first menu click TBM Studio.   This I believe will help you tremendously Phillip.  Let me know what you think.

This is interesting, when you select Reference Applications, which project are you actually looking at? (this is not the live project in Prod). Is there a training module I could go and review again that explains this?

    Posted 05/18/18 10:48 AM

    Hello Gary,

You are correct, it's not your live project. It's a reference project that Apptio builds out as an example of a completed project, with sample data. In here you can see samples of OOTB reports, the required data set and sample relationships between the data sets.  You can also looks a the tables to see sample formulas and which data sets are appended into the Master Data Sets.

The course most tied to this information would be the Intro to CT course and the subsequent backpacks with all of their related videos.  It doesn't explain the relationships in this project specifically but that course is where you build out a sample CT Foundation project, and learn all of the things you could review in this project.

The reports in this project are the same reports you learned about in the CT Reports and Users course.  This means that if your production project isn't complete yet, you could use these reports to start familiarizing yourself with where to find what in the reports.  It won't be your data, but it will get you familiar with the flow of the reports and more comfortable finding answers in the OOTB reports.

I hope that helps a little.

Hi - about a year late to the party, but the Consultant group typically builds model diagrams for customers on an Ad Hoc basis. That said, we typically start with a fairly consistent template (https://tbmcouncil.jiveon.com/docs/DOC-7242?commentID=7178#comment-7178). Perhaps this would be of help, for any wary TBM travelers that happen upon this thread?

This template showcases how the typical Apptio project is modeled. However, this document doesn't show how tables are actually linked (i.e. General Ledger is appended to Cost Source Master Data and pulls information from Account to Cost Pool Mapping and Cost Center Hierarchy). Such documentation is typically created on a "per customer" basis by request.

    Hi @Matt Temple,

That's because the document is behind the internal only firewall.  Let me see if I can do anything to get it surfaced.  Just have to make sure it's ok to be customer facing.

    Cheers,
    Deb
