  • 1.  Problems activating RPG&Cobol License IBM i RDi 9.8

    Posted Thu May 15, 2025 12:58 PM

I have a new PC, where I downlodaded and installed the newest Version of RDi (already sometime ago, so the trial time is over).

Now I wanted to activate my existing License, i.e. I moved the zip file to the new PC and tried to activate it according the description.

Unfortunately if I specify the unzipped Licence it get the error message "Could not find jar:file".

If I unzip the zipfile and specify the zip.in the unzipped folder, it is selected, but I cannot do anything, because "all items are installed".

Someone has an idea what is wrong?

Is my licence no longer valid, do I need a newone?

    Hi Birgitta,

as I had a somehow different but also somehow similar problem today, I can think of two possible problem sources:

    1. Maybe you have clicked something in the Manage License dialog - this leads to a problem with the license system in some cases.
It seems, that sometimes a "floating license" is created, and you cannot apply the activation kit afterwards.
But you also cannot remove that non-existent "floating license".

    2. Sometimes the P2 license system gets corrupted in some way.

The cure for both problems seems to be, to simply delete the Folder

         C:\ProgramData\IBM\p2

    on your machine.

Then restart RDi and immediately close/exit the Manage License dialog window when it appears.

And last - re-apply the activation kit ZIP file via the Install New Software dialog as usual.

It is in fact the ZIP file inside the ZIP file - you have to pull the ZIP out of the "outer ZIP" and place it somewhere, because RDi cannot read the ZIP inside the ZIP.

AFAIK the activation kit has no expiry date.

I hope this helps - if not, just contact me personally - my colleague and I also fiddled a lot around today, but solved it in the end. "Mistress RDi" is a tough nut to crack sometimes.

    HTH and kind regards,

    Daniel

    Just to add,

There is somewhat of an expiry date; I'm not sure if this is checked, though. If you extract the jar, you will see a referenced expiry date inside.

and normally when it doesn't work anymore is when the MINOR version changes, e.g., 9.8 needed a new activation when it came out after 9.6 (9.6 not being able to be used on 9.8, for example). Hopefully, this might change in the future to reflect on, say, the MAJOR version instead of the MINOR version; this would make things easier.

    Hi Daniel,

    thanks for your tips.

It was the floating licence option. It could be changed under Manage Licences --> Apply License.

After having changed it into"Disable floating license enforcement" I could activate my licence
