  • 1.  Old Programs and Manual Processes

    I recently received access to Bob. We have a process that is run every month going back I don't know how many decades. It failed this month and it seems like a great test of Bob's abilities to see if he can help us figure out what went wrong. The problem is, this process has many manual steps - Call this program from a command line, take this menu option, etc.  Is it possible to give Bob a text document containing these instructions to help him understand the programs better?

    Hi Lori, 

    To answer your question: yes, giving that document to Bob would be a good starting point.

    But also, is there any error/diagnostic report that you could provide Bob with?

    For instance, what is the evidence that the process actually failed?

    Thanks for your response. The trouble with this situation is that we didn't have an error or diagnostic report for this process. The team running this could just see that the resulting data was incomplete and incorrect. But I will keep it in mind that we can put error information into the workspace to give additional context if the circumstances warrant.  Thanks!

    I started with copying all the programs we could find related to this process into a folder. I asked Bob to analyze the programs and look for any possible bugs or inconsistencies. Even without loading any documentation about the process, Bob came up with some key issues.  Interestingly enough, the human developer who has also been analyzing these programs for several hours said Bob did identify most of the key issues he had also identified -- It's just that Bob did it in about 30 seconds.  This looking really promising for our organization to be able to understand processes and create documentation for programs that have been running for decades.
