  • 1.  Missing z/VM 640RL1 volume

    Posted Mon April 23, 2018 04:34 PM

We pulled down V12 of the new build last month and are attempting to IPL zVM under V64 but the IPL fails. We also noticed that only 6 volumes were available to download from passport advantage for V64, while our current zVM 63 runs with 10 volumes. Also note that V64 came with volume 630RL1 that looks to be backlevel:

    IPL failure:

    [ibmsys3@tierlrdzut01 RDT91]$ OPRMSG:   HCPZCO6718I Using parm disk 1 on volume 640RL1 (device 0201).

    OPRMSG: Beep!

OPRMSG:   HCPZCO6718I Parm disk resides on cylinders 1 through 120.

    OPRMSG: Beep!

    AWSEMI307I Warning! Disabled Wait CPU 0 = 00020000 00000000 00000000 00006736

Here are the 10 zVM Volumes we currently use for zVM V63:

    630RL1

    M01P01

    M01RES

    M01S01

    M01W01, M01W02, M01W03

    VMCOM1, VMCOM2

Here are the volumes that were available to pull down with zVM V64

630RL1 (we think this should be 640RL1)

    M01P01

    M01RES

    M01S01

    M01W01

    VMCOM1

Please advise on whether or not this is the correct volume for V64 and if there are others missing.

    Cheers, Bruce Warrington

    Hi Bruce,

Our apologies for the inconvenience caused. Could you rename the latest downloaded volume 630RL1 to 640RL1 and try to IPL again? Looks like we have uploaded the 640RL1 renaming it to the wrong name.

Rename should work. Please let us know your outcome.

    Thanks,

    Neeraj Kumar

We will try the rename of the 630RL1 to 640RL1 and advise. can you tell us why the zVM volume count dropped from 10 to 6 with the new release from V63 to V64? We're concerned it is short 4 volumes.

    Thanks, Bruce

Sure Bruce, Nothing to worry about. We wanted to minimize nos of volumes. If you see we have also minimized nos of volumes  on ADCD also. But, I will check with the team on concrete details and get back to you tomorrow.

ok. I think the issue is because VMCOM1 is not referred correctly. COuld you follow steps as here https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSTQBD_12.0.0/com.ibm.zsys.rdt.guide.adcd.doc/topics/iplwithzvmsysresvol.html

Please focus on step7 (in PDVOL=<address of VMCOM1> in your case it will be PDVOL=206)

    Hi Bruce,

We have corrected the volume name in Passport Advantage. My apology for the inconvenience caused.

I hope you are able to IPL your sysplex again with the instruction I sent yesterday.

    Thanks,

    Hi Neeraj,

Thanks for your assistance with this. We were able to set the proper order of the zVM volumes and got it IPLed and upgraded.

We are having several other issues with items since our upgrade,  particularly with key manager. We have PMR's open for both but they are not getting much traction. If you have any idea how we can move these forward it would be a big help for us.

    Cheers,

    Bruce
