    How to keep ZPDTMSRV alive if I need a break (for gzip) between one transfer and another??

    Unfortunately the doc reveals no way to override the 15 minute timeout for ZPDTMSRV.
    If you are running ZPDTMSRV as batch jobs you could simply just submit multiple jobs (with same jobname) and therefore when one completes due to timeout another one kicks in.

    I have always considered this a security feature. You do not want to risk to have an open, forgotten and unmonitored port into your Big Iron forever.

    It is closing down after 15 minutes of inactivity, so I would do all the downloads first and then unzip on the ZD&T/ZPDT system afterwards.
