Is there a NOT slicer?

  • 1.  Is there a NOT slicer?

    Posted 04/16/15 10:17 AM

Is there a way to set up a slicer so that it does the opposite of its normal function?  So instead of filtering to show only the selected item, it actually filters to show everything except the selected item?  This would be useful in cases where a slicer give a lot of values, and you want to see everything tied to all but one or two of the values.

I could just edit the report to filter out the values I don't want, but this would not be a very dynamic solution.

Unfortunately, we do not have this capability right now.

Slicers do have some ctrl/shift-click style negation capabilities (I'm mentioning on the off-chance you haven't seen them).

Depending upon exactly what you're trying to achieve, it may (?) be possible to introduce a new 'category' type of column where it can select from some common negated subsets via inclusion ...

I do understand that this is additional configuation work.  If you would be willing to elaborate specifically why this is helpful it will help us prioritize for future releases...    (for example, "I want to see all servers that aren't in London because ..." (that particular example is rather weak, but hopefully you get the idea?)

    Thanks!

    Paul

I was looking at my usage reports when this question came to mind.  I wanted to see what reports everyone was view with the exception of myself (as the admin, I'm all over the place and I don't want my activity to skew the numbers).

I think probably the ctrl/shift functionality is probably good enough for this... I just didn't know if the functionality was available anywhere.

From a use case perspective, I don't have any that my users are specifically asking for right now.  Maybe someone else has come across a use case.  I thought it could come up at some point, so I figured I'd ask.  I could imagine wanting to look at all cost centers except a certain one... for example, we dump all our maintenance costs into one cost center... if I wanted to view all cost center costs that are not-maintenance related.  But here again, ctrl/shift might be good enough for this, though.

I second this request. We have several cases where we want to look at "all but x" in reports. Some examples:

    • View all direct costs except labor
    • View all servers except Windows
    • View all users except consultants
    • View all departments except HR
    • So on
    • So forth

If they are known in advance, it's possible to create a column in a transform that does this, but it isn't at all dynamic.

I third the request. The config approach is one work around - but as both @James Funk and @Tony Agent mentioned, we have multiple fields/combinations where we need this and its not easy to put all the logic via config. We may need additional slicers which isn't optimal.

One suggestion is to have an invert slicer toggle button that inverts the selection when you click it. That would be SUPER useful.

Thanks for the request for including the "Not Slicer" in Apptio. I have opened up a story that the Products and Engineering team will evaluate for inclusion in a future release. If other customers beyond, Hershey, Marriott & Kaiser would like this capability please add you comment to this thread so we can determine how widespread the requested functionality is. If you have a slightly different use case please add some additional color.

This would be a great feature. Currently our work around is to hold the control key down and click on the slicers we want to see.  Its time consuming if you have 30 items in the slicer and you want to see all but a couple. Add Steelcase to the list.

I like this, but fear it may not be intuitive to report consumers.

It looks like the last comment was 2 years ago so maybe this has been built in since then but I too have a use case that requires a "Not Slicer".  Could someone please let me know if this has been added?  Thanks.

I'm on R12, and I'm not aware that this functionality has been added in at this point (unless I overlooked it).  The shift/ctrl-click ability does work, though, so if nothing else you can use that to get to what you need.  If you or anyone else is unfamiliar with that, in your slicer, click the first slicer option, then hold Shift and click the last slicer option... this will select all of the slicers.  Release the Shift key, then hold Control and individually click the slicer option(s) that you do not want to include.  It's a little clunky and may take a little bit for your users to get used to, but it works.

    Spot on!

It works well when there is a small population of options, but can get very ugly with high number of options to de-select from the slicer...especially if a scrollbar is in play, too.

I'd still like a "not" slicer feature. ;-)

Maybe it would be technically easier and user friendlier to have possibility for invert selection. It could be easily used instead of “NOT” and it is useful in another scenarios too.

A "NOT" slicer would indeed be wonderful, but I thought I'd let you know of a work around we did at UPMC.  We report our financials in many ways.  Because we book depreciation to budget we don't show it in our "Reported Results".  We also don't show one of our LOBs in our "Reported Results" because they pay for all of their IT expenses.  Therefore we created a formula in our Cost Source Master Data that basically says if the expense is depreciation and or X LOB then Exclude, otherwise "Reported Results".  We brought this in to our financial reporting so when the entire area of IT is being looked at (or just his/her department), our end users can choose whether they want to see Total Cost of Ownership or Reported Results.

It might be a work around, but it was an easy one and makes everyone's lives much easier than clicking on which accounts and departments they do or do not want to see!

    Hope it helps others!

That's a good workaround, Molly.  And if I'm understand it correctly, I actually do something similar to that in another use case that I have.  It works well when the thing you want to exclude/include is static.  But when you get different users wanting to exclude different things for different reasons, then it gets a little fuzzier, and is a bit more difficult to account for in a formula field.  I like the workaround though... it gets one step closer to what we're looking for, and helps keep our users happy!

Exactly, James.  It can only work for certain things unfortunately.  Hopefully we will soon have NOT slicer
