  • 1.  Federation Server with Optim for Archiving.

    Posted Mon August 06, 2018 11:32 AM
    Hi All,

We currently use Federation Server 10.1 to assist with our data staging and data prep needs for data archiving. I'm in the process of building a new Optim 11.3 FP6+ env and I will be upgrading our Federation Server installation as well. Federation Server V10.5.0.3 is the latest version that I see on Passport Advantage. Released in 2014!

    • Is Federation Server going away in favor of Information Server?
    • Does anyone know of a road map, transition plan, etc... that they could point me to for Federation Server?

      P.S.
I have a PMR pending a reply from support but I thought i'd solicit input from the community as well.
    Thanks,

    Hello Danny,

With Optim, IBM Federation Server version 10.5 is supported with Optim 11.3. Here is an update from Optim Offering management.

Federation Server 10.5 has announced End Of Support (EOS) of 30 Sept 2017.  See Federation Server EOS announcement letter here:

    http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS916-117

Also, in the same announcement letter, Federation Server 9.7 is withdrawn as of the same date.

Fed Server 10.5 is a Supporting Program of Optim 11.3.

Fed Server 9.7 is a Supporting Program of Optim 9.1.

One major question that arises is:will Federation Server support end for Optim customers on that date (30 Sept 2017)?

The answer is NO.  Support will continue.

The above EOS is information for Fed Server sold standalone.  The EOS does not apply to products (such as Federation Server 10.5) that are incorporated into other products (in this example Optim 11.3) as Supporting Programs.

One other major question is:  Can the customer upgrade from Federation Server 10.5 at no charge when the Supporting Programs include Federation Server 10.5?

The answer is NO.  The license entitles only the use of the explicitly listed version/release of Federation Server (10.5).  Optim must upgrade this in a future release in order to allow customers to use a more recent Federation Server.

Here is the standard Supporting Program language in IPLA agreements, present in Optim:

    Supporting Programs

The Program is licensed as a multi-product package and includes the Supporting Programs identified below. Licensee is authorized to install and use such Supporting Programs only to support Licensee's use of the Principal Program under this Agreement and within the limits of the Proofs of Entitlement for the Program (unless broader rights are provided elsewhere in this License Information document). The phrase "to support Licensee's use" would include only those uses that are necessary or otherwise directly related to a licensed use of the Principal Program or another Supporting Program. The Supporting Programs may not be used for any other purpose. Licensee is not authorized to transfer or remarket the Supporting Programs separate from the Principal Program. A Supporting Program may be accompanied by license terms, and those terms, if any, apply to Licensee's use of that Supporting Program. In the event of conflict, the terms in this License Information document supersede the Supporting Program's terms. When Licensee's right to use the Program expires or terminates, Licensee must discontinue use, destroy or promptly return all copies of the Supporting Programs to the party from whom Licensee acquired the Program. If Licensee downloaded the Supporting Programs, Licensee should contact the party from whom Licensee acquired the Program. If Licensee wishes to license the Supporting Programs for any use beyond the limits set forth above, please contact an IBM Sales Representative or the party from whom Licensee acquired the Program to obtain the appropriate license.

    Hi Danny,

To add to Vishwas' response,  I have the following. See this Techote: https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg22002800

For the question about the road map for Federation Server, it has been added to DB2. The article above states that it is included in DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition v10.5 and IBM DB2 Developer Edition 10.5. As well, it is included in certain editions of Db2 11.1. See the Db2 11.1 Knowledge Center: Functionality in Db2 product editions and Db2 offerings. Note however that Optim does not currently bundle Db2 11.1 so it would have to be purchased separately.

For the Optim 11.3.0.6 release, we did validate that Federation Server in Db2 11.1 can be used to get to Db2 for i version 7.

    Hope that helps!

    Hey Rick,

Just a followup question. What fed wrapper driver versions did you use with the DB2 11.1?
