  • 1.  Does the RDz UT license qualify for access to the latest z/OS ADCD ?

    Posted Wed February 15, 2012 09:11 AM
We have several server licenses for RDz UT. With the RDz UT software package we got z/OS 1.11. Problem is, that we have z/OS 1.13 in our production environment and would like to run this also in the RDz UT environment. Will we be able to get the latest z/OS 1.13 ADCD package ?

Unfortunately, no. The next version of UT will work with z/OS 1.12 and 1.13. Until then you are limited to z/OS 1.11.

zPDT 1.3 will be available on March 30 ... but I could not find the planned release date for the next UT version.

The next version of RDzUT has not been announced yet. Look for an announcement some time in 2Q12.

    John,

maybe you can put this point in your strategic plan for RDz UT. It's really a very important one. I'm working with one customer that is thinking about a proof of concept with RDz UT, but they need the same software in the stack as they have on their production system. I know, this offering is still in its "baby steps", you cannot support every single requirement. But an update option would be really great! If the customer knows that he/she can stay in sync with the production environment, it would influence their decision positively.
The other point is the core update. I've read in the zPDT announcement that the new version (Driver 43 GA3) has a lot of improvements:
    • z196 CPU Architecture
    • Crypto Express 3
    • z196 Coupling (D93G R17 SL4.8)
    • Performance Update IV
    • Faster WAS init
    • Shared Emulated DASD Locking Enhancements

If both are the "same" software in two products, it would be really great to get this version as soon as possible into the RDz UT. The "Faster WAS init" is really good news!
    Are you thinking about this?

Thank you in advance for your time and for the great support in this forum!

    Rodney,
We do allow for some upgrade of software, but remember, the z/OS portions of the UT offering are shipped as is with no warranty and no support. If you have a mainframe service contract for a System z machine and you can acquire maintenance using that machine number, then within the T's and C's of your service contract, we allow you to apply maintenance to the UT system. You are correct in your assertion that we are not a software manufacturing house. As such, the software we support with UT will always be a subset of what is available.

As for UT supporting the GA level of the zPDT System z architecture simulator, we don't support it today and I can't comment on future product capabilities.

    John,

    good news:

    https://www-01.ibm.com/software/rational/products/devtest/systemz/

    • z/OS V1.12 and V1.13, including subfeatures
    • WebSphere Application Server for z/OS V7.0 and V8.0
    • CICS® Transaction Server V3.2, V4.1, and V4.2
    • IMS™ V11.1
    • IBM DB2® for z/OS V9.1 and V10.1
    • IBM WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0
    • IBM Java SDK for z/OS V5.0 and V6.0
    • Enterprise COBOL V4.2
    • Enterprise PL/I V4.1
    • XL C++ V1.12 and V1.13
    • Rational COBOL Runtime V6.0 (EGL)
    • IBM Debug Tool V11.1

Passport Advatage Online still offers the "old" version (10-Nov-2011).

    Do you know:

    • where I can get the z/OS versions V1.12 and V1.13?
    • if this bundle includes the improved 1091 version?
    • is z/OS V1.11 still a part of RDzUT ... it is not listed?

    Thank you

    Ralf,
The url and information you provided reference a new product, Rational Development and Test Environment for System z v8.5. This is a follow on product for RDz-UT. The code and capabilities mentioned in the announcement will be available on PPA at product GA on 5/10/2012. This deliverable does include the latest version of the zPDT System z architecture simulator. It includes a license for z/OS 1.12 and 1.13 and selected runtimes and compilers as you've listed in your note and are listed in the announcement. A full list of supported software will be available in the license which will be published shortly. There are special licensing terms and conditions for this product. As a previous owner of RDz-UT, you may be entitled to some or all of RD&T. Contact your IBM Rational software sales representative for details. Stay tuned to the new Rational System z Dev Test Hub at http://ibm.co/rationalsystemzdevtest for details on the roll out of this exciting new product.

    John,

thank you for the update ... here are some interesting "Announcement Letters" from IBM:

Maybe even more interesting papers if you search for "Rational Development and Test" on the IBM Announcement Letter site.

I'll keep my eyes open ...
