  • 1.  Compute and Storage Labor Allocation

    Posted Wed March 02, 2016 01:28 PM

    Hello All,

My team is Adopting the ATUM Taxonomy for IT Resource Tower. There are team that specifically work on Compute/Storage, but their time aren't necesarily broken out by ITRST (e.g. Tier 1, Tier 2, Windows, Linux) What's the best practice for allocating labor for those teams to Tower/Sub-Towers?

    Hi Richard,

It is great that your organization is adopting ATUM. If the teams aren't broken at sub-tower level, one way could be to look at the actual count of assets for that sub-tower and use that as the guiding principle to allocate costs, for example, if there are more Linux servers than Windows, then spread costs for Compute in that ratio.

    Richard,

    A few ways:

    1. Best Allocation - Labor Timekeeping by Activity. Map Activity to ITRST
    2. Better Allocation -- Labor Timekeeping by Role. Map Role to ITRST
    3. Good Allocation -- Labor Timekeeping by Cost Center .. Map Cost Center to ITRST

    Kevin,

We’re currently at Timekeeping by Role. We have two groups – Server Engineering and Storage Engineering. However, neither of those teams track by Sub-Towers. For my fixed assets I was able to build a % breakout by # of devices in each Sub-Tower Category, which roll into an intermediate object. How can I do a % distribution form Timetracking to ITRST without an intermediate object?

    Kevin,

Would you recommend these three levels of allocation for all IT resource towers or just servers/storage?

@Richard Coronado you should be able to use the LookupEx function in your time tracking transform file to pull in the % breakdown for each subcategory from the same file you are using for Fixed Asset breakouts.
