Color palette mapping

  • 1.  Color palette mapping

    Posted Thu February 04, 2016 11:28 AM

Hello RTBMAs and future Elite TBMAs,

I had a question in class this week that I thought maybe some of you might have some insight into.  One of my students was interested in a way to effectively replace the Apptio reporting color palette with their own corporate color palette.  I don't know of a way to do that off hand (and am investigating internally) but wondering if any of you Apptio experts have done anything like this.

I've taught them how to set Project Level color specs, but they are trying to go beyond this.  Don't actually know if it's possible but looking for ideas from my experts.

Let me know your thoughts. If we find out the answer is no, I'll definitely submit a feature request.

    Cheers,
    @Debbie Hagen

I'm not aware of a UI feature that would extend beyond the limits of the Projects Settings.

Although I haven't done this myself I expect a customer can create a CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) with definitions to control the colors (and other features) and request Apptio Support to add it to the Head section of the web pages.

If Apptio is a proponent of the above approach, I further recommend Apptio publish the IDs and tags (with descriptions) for which customers can reference within their CSS definitions.

Allowing customers to upload their own CSS and image files (e.g. corporate logo) would also be great. Just sayin'. ;-)

    Thanks Matt,

I seem to remember hearing about using CSS some time ago. I'll look into your suggestion whether we could get that documented or at least get it put in as a feature request for a future release.

I can see how adding your corporate logos/image files would be really useful too.... hmm, I'll have to see if I can share this under the feature requests section of TBM Connect.  Haven't tried to move a post or response before.

We are very interested in being able to replace the default Apptio color palette with a custom color palette.

Very interested as well - for reports there are a few restrictions which would be nice to solve - like not being able to blend out the lines of graphs and so far I have only been able to set individual colors for data and not a color set based on values eg from high to low.

Poking @Debbie Hagen, @Nora Paxton, @Diane Kitano for a possible follow-up on this since this topic got a little stale. ;-)

I'd certainly like to be able to reference an stylesheet with reference to font-family links to better blend with my company's branding guidelines.

For example, I'd like to send something like this to Support and request it be added to the Head section:

    <link href='http://insider.ticketmaster.com/brand-guidelines/css/style.css' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>

Then, I'd like to call upon the primary font of InterstateBold, InterstateBlack, etc and other stylesheet related references to properly match our brand guidelines.

    Hey Matt,

I'm pretty confident that this won't be added to R11.8 with the new version coming, but I've sent out an email to the folks who know more about plans for that version to see if there is anything coming down the pipe.

Hi, did anything further ever happen with this?

Good question @Ben Haines.  I've definitely submitted it as a feature request but I don't think it made it in to R12.  I'm going to see if I can move it to the Products page and see if it gets better traction there.

I moved it here to the forum.  Cost Transparency Knowledge Base

Adding @Christy Harrod since she had a somewhat similar question earlier (Color underneath Drill down is bright red).  @Debbie Hagen, you said you moved it, but assuming I'm in the right spot because when I look at the breadcrumbs, it shows Cost Transparency Knowledge Base.  Redirect me if needed, tho, and thank you!

    HI Folks,

I'm definitely still interested in this as well because I have been asked about it a number of times over the years.

@John Adipietro @Mark Nealey - do either of you know who might have any insight into this discussion?  I know I've submitted it as a feature request somewhere back in the past but not sure where it is on the priority list

I haven't personally done this, but my understanding is you can add custom CSS to a HTML component, and then reference it on report by report basis.  However this isn't really recommended as we don't have any good way of knowing what the custom CSS end customers are using.  As a result of this we might create/build content that breaks when it collides with the custom CSS.  Long story short, it's possible, but use at your own risk.

I haven't seen us add the CSS at a global level as Matt calls out above, my guess is there would be a strong resistance to do this.

I believe you could add the HTML box I specify above to the master reports as well, but again, I haven't done/tested this.

Mark and I did confirm there is a feature request submitted for this, but at this time we can't really say when something like that might get added in.  But I went ahead and marked this as answered because I think Mark and Matt have addressed the question but offered some cautions as well.

Hi, I know this is an old post, but checking to see if there is any traction on this feature. It would be awesome to take a screenshot of the Apptio dashboards and paste it in presentations, if the reports had your  company's color scheme.

I haven't seen anything on this capability recently but I'll follow up again to see if it's still out there.

    Hi All,
I've done some investigation on this topic and it looks like custom color palettes are on the Roadmap for Self-Service Reporting.  I don't have a definitive date at this time, but it looks like maybe early next year.  That could move up or back based on other priorities, but it's in the plan for SSR.
Sorry for the delayed response on this one.

Something I'd find more important & useful would be adding filtering/slicing capabilities to SSR.
Te spirit of SSR is empowering users to build their own reports. I find it contradictory that to do any kind of analysis they have to go out of Apptio back into Excel (BTW, the download as CSV is also in dire need of improvement!)
