I want to add some more functionality to Cognos Analytics Dashboards. Is it possible to embed a third party application into native cognos to add more functionality beyond what it's capable of using the SDK?

Adding new visualisations (that integrate with other services) on the dashboard is not documented. I managed to copy an existing visualisation and make some changes to it once. It is very difficult and a lot of work and might break when you upgrade. But possible.

If you are patient, you should all vote for this RFE, which is a request to open the API and write documentation about it, so we can all build cool new stuff. There are some forum posts on the internet where this was announced, but it never materialized. So make yourself heard: RFE: RAVE2 SDK

Cognos is web based application, you can use Javascript to interact with 3rd party application directly within report. REST API data source is now supported much better in Cognos 11.1.7 or later, pretty much most common online /cloud based application or data sources can be accessed. Of course you could do full SDK which Cognos support Java and .NET. Its built-in java application engine can be leveraged to create JSP application very easily.
