    You fail to mention how you are doing your model....but if it is OPL, then the .dat file is your vehicle for making the data externalized.  You can specify a connection and use DataRead() to get data out of a database.  There is also a way to get data from an excel sheet, but I wasn't paying attention to that part of class.
