Benchmarking has long since been one of the tools Apptio provide that I've not really used/experienced before so wanted to harness the immense knowledge of community to help with my task of finding out more about Benchmarking.

Would love to know:

• What was/is the main use case for benchmarking within your org?
• Do you find it useful?
• What do you get out of it that helps to drive decisions within the business? If at all.
• What's the one best thing and one worst thing about the tool?

NB - I promise this isn't a stealth review request just in need of some real life usage stories. Also, if you don't feel comfortable posting please feel free to contact me directly :)

Hello @Julie Batty. We've been doing external benchmarks since 2015. Every 2 years we extract data from CT and ship it to the vendor, who then asks a lot of questions and eventually comes back with a report.
 
We tried the first iteration of Apptio Benchmarking, but when they changed it to the online version, I never got the time to review it.
I guess this will act as a wake up call for me...
I'll answer your questions when I gather enough information. I can't just yet.
 
The original intention of benchmarking was proving to the business that IT is competitive cost-wise.​
I haven't been involved in the benchmarks since 2017, except to provide some data, special reports, and answer questions here and there. I believe we're trying to get some KPIs out of it.
