  • 1.  ATUM Allocation Questions

    Posted 12/17/15 05:59 PM

A client I'm working with is rebuilding their model to be ATUM compliant. They have some questions around designing new allocations. I was wondering if anyone had some experience they could share:

    1. What are some examples of what to include in each Mainframe Sub-Tower "Mainframe", "Mainframe Database" and "Mainframe Middleware".
    2. What costs do you put in Delivery – Operation Center?
    3. Where do you allocate mainframe storage?

    Thank you!

    Joel,

    1. What to include in Mainframe Sub-Tower:
      1. Mainframe - Cost of Hardware maint and support
      2. Mainframe Database - Cost of Mainframe DB (like DB2) and support of DB2
      3. Mainframe Middleware - Cost of Software like Websphere or Control-M that support front end Applications.
    2. Delivery - Operations Center - This is really all the labor, sw, hw, etc associated with running a Network Operations Center.  This includes stuff like Monitoring, Performance and availability tools, and the staff required to monitor alarms / alerts / etc.
    3. Mainframe Storage - Check with Products on the formal response to fit this into ATUM, but I would say that it depends on the customers use case.  Who wants to view the TCO?  Is it the Mainframe owner to view the TCO of Mainframe? Or is it the Storage owner who owns all of Storage?  My experience is that DASD storage is completely different than SAN or NAS so you should treat DASD storage as part of the Mainframe TCO.  That being what it is, it should be part of mainframe sub-tower or specifically called out under compute
