Applications TCO Process Guide?

  • 1.  Applications TCO Process Guide?

    Posted Sat August 26, 2017 10:25 AM

There is mention of an Applications TCO Process Guide in the CT Apps and Services V12 - App Reports Overview training video at the very end. I searched in Community and could not find it. Any pointers on where I can get it would be much appreciated.

Hey good morning @Jesse Sharp, is this video one of yours? Any pointers on finding the App TCO guide?

Srikanth Satakopan - Unfortunately, there is no App TCO process guide currently available. At the time the video was published we were hoping to receive an updated V12 guide. We'll make sure the information in the video receives an update. I am awaiting responses to internal inquiries I have made regarding an app TCO process.I'll post back here when folks get back to me. In the meantime, if you have not read this you may find it useful:

Srikanth Satakopan - here is the most useful document I could find for your request - although it already a few updates out of sync.  Additionally, make sure you review the Apptio Value Explorer (AVE) because that is always up-to-date. Use the AVE as your primary source and cross reference to the matrix screenshot included here.

This may help as well. If you are considering or already working towards App TCO the following are some general guidelines that will assist you.

    •      Make sure that you have  a reliable financial layer, as well as IT Towers mappings and Time Tracking data in order to allocate App costs more accurately up in the model
    •      Make sure to get additional details about:
    •    How cost components (i.e. Towers and Cost Pools) are associated with an App
    •    What are Servers / Storage / Mainframes an App is running on
    •    Support costs and Service Desk / Tickets associated with an App
    •    Projects that are fixing or enhancing Apps functionalities and how they are sponsored
    •      Assumptions need to be made about how to drive costs up to Apps in case of data quality/availability issues because the defensibility and usefulness of the App TCO will depend on the quality and defensibility of those assumptions
    •      Strive to propose defensible/best practice allocation strategies in case of unallocated costs

Thank you Jesse! Very helpful! Our TBMO team also put together a high level picture for our governance and executives on the components that make up App TCO that I am sharing. A picture we use constantly in governance and sponsorship meetings.

I like yours way better than ours - we got a "little" too granular with ours - showing the percentages of cost pool dollars hitting, percentage of towers, etc.  I mean, it's a cool diagram, don't get me wrong, but it'll make your eyes glaze over really quick.  We affectionately call it the 'TBM Universe'. I'm going to work on a cleaner version like yours above.   (PS, this isn't my drawing and I unfortunately cannot find the original)

Hi Jenny, Could you share a more readable version as PPT slide or something? If there is company confidential information, please don't. I would really like to see your Apptio Universe. I tried to zoom in on the picture but still find it difficult to read.

Unfortunately, I just have that picture.  The dark purple circles are the towers such as compute, data center, network, applications, etc. - I guess a better word would be cost drivers - those allocation lines going into the applications object.  Prior to that is the sub-tower categories that feed into those (in gray), and then the green circles are the cost pools.  We didn't blow those out, tho - just have 'cost pools' shown.  The yellow cylinders are the data sources feeding that area.  So for servers (compute), for example, we would show ServiceNow, CMDB, etc.  I hope that helps!  I plan on creating a diagram that looks like yours - easier on the eyes and easier for our non-TBMO customers to digest.
