Allocation Confusion!

  • 1.  Allocation Confusion!

    Posted 03/27/17 08:50 AM

I have a line on the model summary data which says it's 100% allocated but when I trace it on the model it doesn't actually go anywhere. Anyone know why this could be?

    Julie,

It could be an OOTB allocation line where there might not be data for a particular month so it shows the allocation out of the object at 100 percent, but when you go to the object it shows no rows to be displayed

If you can, put in a screenshot

    Cheers,

    Ryan

Hi Ryan, please see below - there is cost but I've removed the values. As you can see the data/cost is 100% assigned but it's not actually going anywhere on the trace

Ah, so it appears that you're going from ITRT to Projects.  I believe that what's happening is that in the Projects Object there is a key (Projects to ITRT Key) that is potentially conflicting with the key from the ITRT to Projects Allocation line.  You may need to add an object between those objects and then you should be able to trace between those too objects.

It's flowing from ITRT but my question relates to Projects to Apps - it states 100% but isn't flowing to Apps

    Julie,

If it's not flowing from Projects to Apps, could it be due to the relationship from Projects to Apps?  Is your Application ID column populated?

There is no application, the allocation line is taking our Project Overhead cost and spreading that cost across all applications which already have project costs using a new metric.

The money is getting to these projects as the Project Overhead is showing up on all the Project and App related reports just not showing up on the trace.

    Julie,

Could you send the allocation line between ITRT to Projects (the allocation strategy, From, To, Allocation).  I am wondering if it's leveraging one of the bottom items of the From (where it's remaining dollars) or Heritage costing that's not allowing us to see the details.

I'm just tracing elsewhere on the model & it seems to be happening at Towers up also - think I need to get Support on to it!!

I'll send the screenshot over shortly

Ah, Julie, do you have the one from ITRT to Projects?  That was the one you were trying to do the trace on and it wasn't showing anything

The costs are coming from Towers but once at Projects the trace isn't showing the allocation

Thanks I don't see anything that would cause the trace to not function.  The only other question is are you doing this in DEV?  If so, it could be that it's taking some time to calculate and\or there could be a cache issue depending on changes and the number of traces that have occurred.

Yes it's in DEV - I'll check the other environments

Yeah it's in STG too - I've not pushed this work to PROD yet & it's tracing fine there.

(I've opened a ticket with Support)

Thanks Julie, sounds like something may be acting a little funky in the background

So the reason for the tracing issue has been confirmed by Support:

"After several internal discussions...this is a known issue that has been addressed in R12. When you are weighting by a cost driver, the weighting won't be taken into account when tracing in some cases....this has been taken care of in R12"
