  • 1.  AIOps Service definition automatically

    Posted Mon January 05, 2026 07:31 AM

We are implementing an AIOps solution in a Telecom environment.

The idea is to use the Service defined in the topology to identify different locations or regions.

The expected volume is to define approximately 3000 services.

Is there an equivalent mechanism to the one in Resource Groups to automatically generate Services from topology data?

Is there any limitation on the number of Services defined?

We consider that there is a practical limit of 30,000 for Resource Groups. Would this limit also apply to Services?

Thank you in advance for your support.

    Hi Antonio,

Service definitions tend to be pretty heterogeneous, so it will depend on exactly what you want to consider a Service. Service model limitations can also depend on things the provenance of the data.

There are approaches supported by the product today that may be able to help. Additionally, there are some roadmap plans to improve these sort of Service models.

It would be great to discuss further, please reach out to me at matt.griswold@ibm.com

    Thanks!

    Hi Antonio.

I think a tool you could use to segment the devices, as I understand you need, is tags. You could assign tags during the topology process or dynamically using rules, and these tags could then be used to create resource groups. Each resource group can contain up to 10,000 resources, but I understand that you can create as many resource groups as you need.

    Best regards,

    Sergio

    Thank you for your attention.

We are already creating resource groups automatically using tags.

In one of the several queries I made, there was a note that, in theory, there would be no limit to the number of resource groups. However, in practice, the suggested limit was 30,000 resource groups.

I don't know if this limitation is still valid.

    Hi,

We support 60,000 groups and it's not a hard-limit although one should keep an eye on the number being created.

Re: services, standard resource groups are often a good and acceptable way of doing what I think you're trying to do and you then benefit from the template automation we have for token and dynamic templates for example.  If there's a strict requirement to create apps/services (in that tab in the UI), then we don't have an automated way of doing that at the moment although you could use APIs and scripts to do that - my guidance would be to see if standard templates can meet the requirement and I would be looking at using a token template for this.

In an AIOps solution, you can use topology data to automate service creation by leveraging existing service discovery mechanisms. While there isn't a direct equivalent to Resource Groups, topology-based service mapping can streamline service identification. As for scalability, most AIOps platforms can handle thousands of services, with the practical limit typically being influenced by the platform's architecture and performance. If 30,000 Resource Groups is a guideline, similar thresholds could apply to services, but it's best to check with your platform provider for specifics.
