I am new to IBM cloud services, and wanted to try a hosted CloudAnt solution. I know my dataset is about 0.5G, so figured I could work with 1G free tier until I got some queries figured out and optimized. Due to a defect in about 10% of my data, my DB size climbed to 0.7GB and I suddenly started receiving a 402 error (size limit exceeded, please pay).

I can delete the database and start over, but now I'm wondering: how is storage capacity calculated by IBM? Where is the other 0.3GB?

    Hello Jefferey,

Thank you for using IBM Cloud and Cloudant!

As per below IBM Cloud Docs, Storage is for the amount of disk space occupied by your JSON data, attachments, and secondary indices.

Assuming 0.7GB of DB size you are referring to is for JSON data volume, then the remaining 0.3GB could potentially be either attachments and/or secondary indices.

As you mentioned, Cloudant's Lite Plan (free tier) instances have a fixed amount of provisioned throughput capacity and data storage.  The provisioned throughput capacity is fixed at 20 reads per second, 10 writes per second, and 5 global queries per second, and data storage is capped at 1GB.  Storage usage is checked daily.  If you exceed your 1GB storage limit, requests to the IBM Cloudant instance receive a 402 status code with the following error message, "Account has exceeded its data usage quota. An upgrade to a paid plan is required."  A banner also appears on the IBM Cloudant Dashboard.

In any case if you have questions around billing and usage, you can open Support cases with a Lite Plan and free support and Support team will be happy to assist you.  (With Lite Plan, you can open cases that are related to access management, accounts, and billing and usage)

    Hope that helps!
